Welcome to the Western Digital HF Net.

This new West-of-the-Rockies digital traffic net endeavors to reach out to the Amateur radio stations and
provide traffic service:

— In times of poor voice propagation;
— In circumstances where accurate information needs to get through;
— To pass non-trivial traffic and QSTs to participating stations;
— To relay non-trivial information to remote stations;
— And to relay traffic for stations in challenging situations.

We serve the entire amateur radio community and can use our NBEMS capabilities and relay locations to
assist voice nets, mobile stations, QRP stations and to check DX and propagation. We are not an
end-to-end system like NTS, we are an FLDigi-based relay net for those using sound card systems. Our
ops may volunteer to forward your traffic beyond our net, however that is not our primary mission.

All stations are welcomed.

IMPORTANT: This net has only two check-in “precedence” types: Priority and Routine. It will be assumed
that your traffic is Routine unless the Priority word is added. PLEASE ONLY USE PRIORITY FOR URGENT
TRAFFIC. We will drop everything and deal with that traffic before anything else. This is NOT for trivial or
personal traffic that you just don’t feel like waiting your turn to send.

HOW TO BREAK
If you need to break in, there are two methods. You can send a brief TUNE signal in between any TX or
you can use Video ID just above or below when any station other than NCS is TXing. NCS will acknowledg
e your break immediately to see what you need.

HOW TO SEND TRAFFIC AND QSTs
Following the conventions established by the ORCA Net, longer QSTs should be sent via FLAmp or
FLMessage (ICS or plain text forms are optional). Shorter traffic may be sent by KBD or FLMsg.

Please check in and use the ORCA conventions for pre-tune (to prevent doubles), Video ID and KBD to
send the following:

CALL  Name  [ Priority  |  QRU  |  QST  |  (#)TFC for CALLSIGN  | Relay (relayed call) ]

QTC can also be used in place of TFC above as here they both mean “I have Traffic.”

You will be acknowledged by NCS and your traffic will be queued.

Once the traffic round is complete, NCS will call each station who have QSTs.

After the QST Round, we will call stations in the roster sequence to comment on the mission and format
of this net, ask NCS any questions or volunteer to help with the new Net.

So any check-ins (again, pre-tune or use Video ID) please come now. < K6ETA / NCS

WDN < K6ETA / NCS  OK hearing none, let’s move right into the Traffic round.

KB7VX < K6ETA / NCS Bruce, thanks to Doug I got the rest of your NTS message. Will forward via NTSD.
Thx.

BK

WDN < K6ETA / NCS OK That’s it for traffic!

Before we go to QST round, here’s a WDN update.

A note regarding NTS messages

We have a VHF backbone link with an NTSD (digital) op, Joe AG6QO, who can forward *correctly
formatted* NTSD messages into the NTS without human intervention.

IMPORTANT: If you wish to use the NTS to further relay any messages from the WDN, you will need to
read up on NTS and NTSD message procedures. It’s the responsibility of the *originating station* to
follow NTS guidelines on format and brevity. Improperly formatted or uneccessarily long messages will
be rejected. WDN will not review your NTS traffic, it simply gets forwarded on to NTSD.

Information about NTSD can be found here:
http://www.arrl.org/nts

WDN is also pleased to relay messages using packet/BBS and using the Winlink system. NCS will also
forward messages via regular email if requested.

:mg:660 Macro Tips:
I often make or revise macros on-the-fly during nets. To do this quickly, I have a SAVE button on each set
of macros.  The <SAVE> TAG saves the current macro file w/o navigating up to the Menu bar and
inputing three mouse clicks. A near-by mouse click on SAVE is all it takes!

If you transfer your macros from a WinOS to Linux, the control characters ‘^M’ now appear on every
button. It looks terrible and makes them hard to read. These control characters can be removed in one
stroke with the free to download app, dos2unix. These characters can also be removed one-by-one in
the Macro Editor, but if you have many macros, it’s a tedious process.

Minor Storm Observed
An isolated period of minor (G1) geomagnetic storming was observed at 05:59 UTC Wednesday morning.
This was the result of an elevated solar wind stream containing sectors of southward Bz. Visible aurora
will remain possible at higher latitudes.

Steve, your station faded greatly around 7:55 PST tonight.

That was a bleak solar update!  🙁

I didn’t hear the AZ station, so I decided to use the KPH SDR, but all station
comments are from my station here in Eureka.

We have a new tech class starting in March.  Today I made fliers and took them to
many local retailers/wholesalers.  Tomorrow, I plan to call local broadcast station
and ask them to sponser the class.  Would be cool to pack the class room!

Good solar day here.  Batteries are fully charged and station is 100%.

Made contact with old Navy buddy last week.  Almost 40 years since our last

Looking forward to seeing the new WDN website.

Thank you for participating in the Western Digital Net!

With ops like you we are able to use or NBEMS skills to offer a real service to the Amateur Radio
community.

We would like to thank Doug K7KY and Mindy W7ZAP and all the ops from the ORCA Net for training and
developing the many conventions and skills we use here. Please check out the ORCA Net at this time
(0330 ZULU) and frequency every Tuesday night!

We also encourage any and all ops who wish to provide fills, test modes, macros, etc., to hold this
frequency after the net. Hopefully this time and place on the band will become a known ‘watering hole’
for all digital ops.

Thanks from the WDN team and good evening from Sonoma County, California!
