Firstly, an acknowledgement of Doug K7KY and Mindy W7ZAP who for seven years
have run the ORCA Digital Net! Without the work and consistent commitment of Doug
and Mindy, we wouldn’t have enough capable ops to try something like this!

< K6ETA Welcome to a round-table discussion to consider the formation of the new Western Digital HF Net.

This new net endeavors to build on that foundation to reach out to the Amateur radio stations and provide traffic service:

— In times of poor voice propagation;
— In circumstances where accurate information needs to get through;
— And for stations in challenging situations.

We serve the entire amateur radio community and can use our NBEMS capabilities and relay locations to assist voice nets, mobile stations, QRP
stations and to check DX and propagation.

Please check in if you would like to discuss the formation of this new net. Please use the ORCA conventions for pre-tune (to prevent doubles). Then
use Video ID and/or KBD to send the following:
CALL Name [Priority | QRU | QST | (#)TFK for CALLSIGN | Relay]

You will be acknowledged by NCS and asked to summarize in 8 words or less your traffic if any.

The traffic round will be prioritized by NCS and a priority list will be sent.

Following the conventions established by the ORCA Net, longer QSTs should be sent via FLAmp or FLMessage (ICS or plain text forms are optional).
Shorter traffic may be sent by KBD or FLMsg.

Once the traffic round is complete (which should be short tonight), we will call each station in sequence to comment on the mission and format of this net, ask NCS any questions or volunteer to help with the new Net.
Possible Net focuses:

⁃ Scheduled message handling for maritime mobiles, mobiles, portables and QRP stations (home would stations relay)
⁃ A pure DX Net (series of relay calls for check-ins, then signal reports are the main traffic)
⁃ WX, Space Weather, Fire and Earthquake reports + Emergency and Health & Welfare traffic
⁃ A digital companion to Satern, Skywarn, Maritime Mobile Service Net, etc.
⁃ A West-of-the-Rockies NBEMS Net with general check-ins and brief traffic

So any check-ins (again, pre-tune or use Video ID) please come now. < K6ETA / NCS

WDN < K6ETA OK hearing none, we will move right into the Traffic Round and start with Brad WA7HHE pse send your TFC < K6ETA

K7KY < K6ETA FB Doug, yes I think we can figure out a way to use FLDigi forms for NTC relays. That’s a high priority so in the comments round
let’s discuss.

BREAK

OK that’s it for TFC Round. Before we start with comments, are there any new check ins? Pse come now. < K6ETA

WDN < K6ETA Any relays? < K6ETA

WDN < K6ETA None heard.

Firstly, an acknowledgement of Doug K7KY and Mindy W7ZAP who for seven years
have run the ORCA Digital Net! Without the work and consistent commitment of Doug
and Mindy, we wouldn’t have enough capable ops to try something like this!

The OPs who have shown up on Tuesdays over the last seven years have shown
themselves to be more than ready to handle just about every band condx and mode
available! We will need their help to be sure!

Tonight we will talk a little more about the mission of WDN. Chime in on any or all of these:

1] Should we adopt NTS message format standards (not FLDigi forms) for radiograms?

2] Should there be qualifications for being a relay station (such as X number of active ORCA Nets)?

3] Are you interested in becoming one of the NCS stations for WDN? If so, how often?

So with those subjects in mind we will start the Comments round with:

W7ZAP Mindy Brookings, OR Go ahead with your thoughts! < K6ETA

Just a couple quick thoughts:
1] What does the NTS message format look like for a digital msg?
2] Don’t see a need for qualifications for a relay. If relay done incorrectly, NCS can coach.

I’m partial to the focus of WX, Space WX, Maritime Mobile, EMCOMM

Thanks for taking this project on Steve!
BTN < W7ZAP K

W7ZAP < K6ETA FB Mindy and I agree! BREAK Next up is N7SND Larry Cedar City, UT I may need a relay, but let’s try! < K6ETA

WDN < K6ETA OK let’s move on.

BREAK Next we go to W6DLW Dennis, Cedar City, UT Pse go now. < K6ETA

WDN < WA7HHE, W6DLW asks to be excused as he is NCS for a local 2 mtr net. He will try and check back

WA7HHE < K6ETA OK thanks Brad and it’s ur turn anyway! Go. < K6ETA

WSN < WA7HHE, Thoughts on MSG format, am guessing if we are to interface into the NTS would need to be radiogram format. Be nice to be able
to run digital up to end handoff, and not have to convert to a voice msg. Our 40m Bee Hive net has been finding it difficult to pass voice tfc with
band condx as they are.

Seasoned station might be good for relaying, With much volunteering this stations is unable to participate in a NCS roll at this time.

Readying for the WFD this weekend have my swim trunks packed for the polar plunge:)

73’s Brad WA7HHE

WA7HHE < K6ETA FB and Hi Hi Brad. BREAK Next we go to KI7TPD Fred, Cedar City, Utah Go! < K6ETA

WDN < KI7TPD

For the mission I like a West-of-the-Rockies NBEMS Net with general check-ins and brief traffic including: WX, Space Weather, Fire and Earthquake
reports + Emergency and Health & Welfare traffic as needed. That way we can get some practice and then during an emergency can aid in
communications as needed.

  1. Not a strong opinion on the radiogram format. The advantage with FLMSG is everyone will have that template with FLMSG and would not need to install custom forms.
  2. Location is probably more important for relays
  3. I can be a backup NCS as needed. Thursdays are going to get a bit crazy soon. We are having a Tech class for new HAMs and I am one of the
    teachers…

73s Everyone!
KI7TPD

KI7TPD < K6ETA Thanks Fred. Yes, I think the missions do overlap quite a bit, so maybe all of the above except pure DX? BREAK Next up is
KA7FOO Doug Quartzsite, AZ sri, paste error go ahead Doug! < K6ETA

MY COMMENTS *

#1 We should use the internal forms. Also we should use the WinLink forms in the “text” format= WinLink supports many agencies.

#2 Yes. NCS and relay stations should be only those operators that run (NCS) other digital nets.

#3 That is questionable. Now that I am a legal “Vagabond” I may not be able to hold a set schedule due to my “Blowing In The Wind” life style.

GE to everybody.

WDN de ke6sls

tu Steve and teh gang. My only real opinion is RELAY stations ARE NEEDED. I could very easily be unable to copy both you and k7ky but I can
hear UT strong here. So I think as stations come on, learn the ropes, they should be considered GOOD to GO…

msg format no opinion here..

I do like the H&W and of course just basic chks with copy info. The rest is just cake!

TU and de ke6sls k

KE6SLS < K6ETA OK FB and I agree abt the need for good relays. I think we already have several!
Another thing is it would be good to have a main Cedar City UT ‘captain’ to select a relay for each week. UT is indeed ideal for that. So many great
stations there too!

BREAK

Next is K7KY Doug Brookings, OR Hah! paste worked Go ahead Doug < K6ETA

WDN < K7KY TU Steve… First, tu for standing up the net. I’m already enjoying working from the other end. as to the NTS form I think
someoone may have already made a form that will work in FLDIGI. we should work from FLDIGI if we can. I’ll look int0 it. I woiuld like to see us work H&W traffic, NTS,and bulletins from EMCOMM agencies and bulletins too. I can’t work NCS yet and I really want to work from this end for awhile..it’s a real treat & ur doing a great job of running a digital net Steve! AS to CC Ops you couldn’t find a better group to rely on RELAYs I wouild not restrice them to needing ORCA time QTH capabillities and signal quality are more important NCS can sort them out btn < NCS

K7KY < K6ETA Agreed on all. One of the main issues is on the VOICE portion of NTS, which may be needed on occasion, they have strick format
and no odd characters. But maybe we can just focus on NTSD (the digital arm of NTS) and start from there.

On Relays and NCS, I think we already have a core of competent stations ready to roll thx to u and Mindy! Anyway, I’m sure a lot of this will happen organically. It’s only a matter of time before I’m out of town or in bed with the flu, so having a pool of NCS capable stations would be good.

ALSO, I’m finding that my path it good to most but not all regular stations. …more to noodle on.

fb Steve. Tnx for starting this net. I am not going to add my call for NCS at this
time as my whole world is turning upside down and i might have to drop almost all my ham time very soon for a possible new job..

second, I need to have a ROSTER at the top of the net. We are going to head into summer condx and many of us might fail to hear NCS or
others, but if we have a Roster, we can figure out our turn.

third, you need a little cheat sheet to call net and not forget parts, too easy when you get absorbed into good discussions to forget. I call
way too many nets and I am lost with out my little hand outs!

I’m gaim for pretty much anthing net wise. if I am able, I will RELAY or NCS but I can’t call ncs right now.

be really cool if NCS could actually pick a station right at chk in time to make an FLmsg for roster then when the net kicks off, first thing we hear is the FLmsg roster then NCS takes over. thought. now I’ll be quiet 🙂 heeeheee

tnx guys.

KE6SLS < K6ETA Interesting idea… but what if the FLMsg station isn’t heard by all? I suppose a little relay action at the beginning wouldn’t hurt…
afterall this is a TFC RELAY Net! Thanks Jaye
BREAK

I want to thank everyone who has participated and will look forward to building this to serve a real need. I’m going to close this round tabe net BUT I think a GOOD tradition to start right here and now will be for ANY STations who want to keep the freq after close of net should do so. We can have mode shootouts, fill FLAmp QST, etc., and also just have a place and time to know other stations will be around to try stuff! So I’m closing the Net and stepping out of the way – will be monitoring! < K6ETA

K6ETA < K7KY Steve, we’re really enjoying ur net. Good job! Really! Great we know just how much concentrtion it takes I would make
the roster in FLMSG myself as it goes out well and stays near on the desktop… we have macros that we use every week I’ll send them along if
you’d like to ake them apart or revise them…. at ck-in our busiest time after the FLAMP exercise we move quickly btwn FLDIGI & FLMSG using
cpy/paste our macros are set up for this anyway, any thing we can do to help justask btu < K7KY

K7KY < K6ETA Thanks and I would love to see your macros! That sounds funny hi. Well I appreciate any support I can get! thx < K6ETA
