< K6ETA  Welcome to a round-table discussion to consider the formation of the new Western Digital HF Net.

Our mission has settled into a West-of-the-Rockies Traffic net with brief traffic as well as Space WX and regional alerts and bulletins of interest.
This new net endeavors to reach out to the Amateur radio stations and provide traffic service:

— In times of poor voice propagation;
— In circumstances where accurate information needs to get through;
— And for stations in challenging situations.

We serve the entire amateur radio community and can use our NBEMS capabilities and relay locations to assist voice nets, mobile stations, QRP
stations and  to check DX and propagation. And of course, we use the well-established ORCA standards!

Please check in if you would like to discuss the formation of this new net. Please use the ORCA conventions for pre-tune (to prevent doubles). Then use Video ID and/or KBD to send the following:
CALL  Name  [Priority  |  QRU  |  QST  |  (#)TFK for CALLSIGN  | Relay]

You will be acknowledged by NCS and asked to summarize in 8 words or less your traffic if any.

The traffic round will be prioritized by NCS and a priority list will be sent.

Following the conventions established by the ORCA Net, longer QSTs should be sent via FLAmp or FLMessage (ICS or plain text forms are optional). Shorter traffic may be sent by KBD or FLMsg.

Once the traffic round is complete (which should be short tonight), we will call each station in sequence to comment on the mission and format of this net, ask NCS any questions or volunteer to help with the new Net.

:mg:321 WDN participation has increased each week. It’s really gratifying.

And, very nice to discover we can process ARRL RadioGrams in FLMSG with ‘File/View/Plain Text’. At times, this could be major traffic for WDN.

Our ORCA logfile, ‘ORCA_logbook.adif’ is available for NCS. It has all the ORCA Ops that are and ever were.

K7KY < K6ETA FB Doug and, YES there will be an announcement regarding Radiograms. Agreed that this will be an important function of WDN.
BREAK

OK, that completes traffic as check ins noted. Does anyone have traffic that wasn’t captured by the roster?    <  K6ETA

WDN  < K6ETA OK Hearing none.

Firstly, an acknowledgement of Doug K7KY and Mindy W7ZAP who for seven years
have run the ORCA Digital Net! Without the work and consistent commitment of Doug
and Mindy, we wouldn’t have enough capable ops to try something like this!

The OPs who have shown up on Tuesdays over the last seven years have shown
themselves to be more than ready to handle just about every band condx and mode
available! We will need their help to be sure!

Update on the Western Digital Net (WDN).

We now have a solid path to forward NTSD radiograms! Any Radiogram created in FLMsg will be forwarded via the Northern California packet
backbone, then relayed as needed over the NTSD network. We are ready to relay! Please use the FLMsg Radiogram to COMPLETELY fill out your
message including giving it a serial number and including the ZIP code — then your message can be automatically forwarded over NTSD.

Thanks to the ORCA Ops and some other HF NBEMS aficionados, we have established a core group of 8-10 HF stations available to relay and
participate.

Our mission has settled into a West-of-the-Rockies Traffic net with brief traffic as well as Space WX and regional alerts and bulletins of interest.
This new net endeavors to reach out to the Amateur radio stations and provide traffic service:

RR FB Steve….    u already have a good mission taking the ORCA Ops to the next level   an actual working HF Traffric et… we needed
it.   and if we maintain our momentum     radio work will find WDN    we know how it feels to wrap a long net and then have half a dozen folks who want to chat    take the evening off after a great job   73 Doug K7KY  Mindy says gN   < K7KY

K7KY < K6ETA Thx u two. One final thing. I’m only offering relays and fills on QSTs and general traffic that might be of interest to those who
missed. When traffic is sent to a single op, (or just NCS) I’m not offering to relay. Ur thoughts?    <  K6ETA

R oNx ont R tnwe agree w/u    we do similar with Traffic Round sent to NCS    we don’t fill that during net, but recently began filling that traffic
after net   we had requests to fill interesting traffic   i wouldn’t fill or relay traffic sent to u unless it was relevant to the net  btu   < K7KY

K7KY < K6ETA We could play with relaying the FLMsg early check ins roster where every checked in station sends (relays) the roster when the list comes to them, then asks it any monitoring stations wish to be added… instead of NCS just sitting there taking earlies. Might be fun and effective or maybe pure chaos.  ??

DiRj-uInitially it sounds good   we’ll think it around some… I would be inclined to have some things like that and other things like relays and even
a bit of busy work to keep them active and attentive  until the net is strongly establlished when you can tighten up the protocols as needed.   it will be good to keep them engaged and active  I think   you’re off to a good beginning and I think it will turn out well  73   < K7KY

K6ETA de KE6SLS yeah, I thought it might be Don, wa6nbg testing. He has
WINDOWS MS issues, his system gets locked up doing some kind of massive
file write, and the other night on ORCA, he wasn’t able to complete one copy
on flmsg or flamp due to FLdigi coming to a stop during the MS write,   I HATE
MS,    🙂

anyway, he might be testing and trying to find the problem.

good net tonight btw, and band came WAY up again, I turned down my
power here.

KE6SLS < K6ETA Yeah ur way up at +6 s/n S9+10 now… we actually have sun spot activity for a change! Only a 5% chance of an M flace but a few
littl C flares for ionize things. what a treat! Anywho sure thing on read only terminal access if you want to monitor! Lemme know.

I’m gonna sign of but thankx for being out here Jaye!    < K6ETA

K6ETA de KE6SLS yeah, no worries om.    What I was wanting to do is have you
turn on the text capture, and give me shell   there,  I can copy and paste a
real time update on a desktop text file for the roster and you wouln’t have to
scramble so much,   but, I can also just cheat the sytem like I am still doing
doing a half and half on fldig, using the SDR as my rx and my local transmitter
on tx.   I did this the last net and it was kind of cludgy on the pi, it was
so borked, I did finally hammer it into working, but audio is funky on it with
the ubuntu pi distro, and I am still hunting a better distro to make it play
nice.

already man, let ya go and rest.   good work and tnx agn.    We can try the
experiement or not, easy to do either way, but I think it would be cool to take
preasure off NCS so NCS is more avtive on the live terminal of fldigi.

whew, I can’t say it in less words 🙂

KE6SLS < K6ETA Yeah let’s try that! I also use SDR and I’m on a Latte Panda Alpha single board computer (12V of course) so I have a lot of
horsepower on Linux Mint. OK signing off and GN Jaye 73 de K6ETA SK
