< K6ETA / NCS

Welcome to the final round-table discussion to consider the formation of the new Western Digital HF Net. After this week, we will
launch the regular net.

This new West-of-the-Rockies digital traffic net endeavors to reach out to the Amateur radio stations and provide traffic service:

— In times of poor voice propagation;
— In circumstances where accurate information needs to get through;
— To pass non-trivial traffic and QSTs to participating stations;
— To relay non-trivial information to remote stations;
— And to relay traffic for stations in challenging situations.

We serve the entire amateur radio community and can use our NBEMS capabilities and relay locations to assist voice nets, mobile
stations, QRP stations and to check DX and propagation.

All stations are welcomed.

IMPORTANT: This net has only two check-in “precedence” types: Priority and Routine. It will be assumed that your traffic is Routine
unless the Priority word is added. PLEASE ONLY USE PRIORITY FOR URGENT TRAFFIC. We will drop everything and deal with that
traffic before anything else. This is NOT for trivial or personal traffic that you just don’t feel like waiting your turn to send.

HOW TO BREAK
If you need to break in, there are two methods. You can send a brief TUNE signal in between any TX or you can use Video ID just
above or below when any station other than NCS is TXing. NCS will acknowledge your break immediately to see what you need.

HOW TO SEND TRAFFIC AND QSTs
Following the conventions established by the ORCA Net, longer QSTs should be sent via FLAmp or FLMessage (ICS or plain text
forms are optional). Shorter traffic may be sent by KBD or FLMsg.
That said, please check in and use the ORCA conventions for pre-tune (to prevent doubles), Video ID and KBD to send the
following:

CALL  Name  [ Priority  |  QRU  |  QST  |  (#)TFC for CALLSIGN  | Relay (relayed call) ]

QTC can also be used in place of TFC above as here they both mean “I have Traffic.”

You will be acknowledged by NCS and may be asked to summarize in a few words your traffic if any.

Once the traffic round is complete, we will call each station who have QSTs in a sequence determined by NCS.

After the QST Round, we will call stations in the roster sequence to comment on the mission and format of this net, ask NCS any
questions or volunteer to help with the new Net.

So any check-ins (again, pre-tune or use Video ID) please come now. < K6ETA / NCS

WDN < K6ETA / NCS OK that’s the roster as I have it! MAN! that was efficient and quite FUN!  =) I’ve never seen folks move so
quickly! I suppose that only works well when condx are good tho.

BK OK! My turn for comments. First to Bruce… NO you can send a radiogram in plain text OR over FLMsg format as the RXing
station can open it and it will be in the correct format either way. The important thing is getting it 100% so if it’s sent in FLMsg and
there are checksum errors, the RX station should request a resend in FLAmp.

OK

Thank you for participating in the Western Digital Net!

With ops like you we are able to use or NBEMS skills to offer a real service to the Amateur Radio community.

We would like to thank Doug K7KY and Mindy W7ZAP and all the ops from the ORCA Net for training and developing the many
conventions and skills we use here. Please check out the ORCA Net at this time (0330 ZULU) and frequency every Tuesday night!

We also encourage any and all ops who wish to provide fills, test modes, macros, etc., to hold this frequency after the net.
Hopefully this time and place on the band will become a known ‘watering hole’ for all digital ops.

Thanks from the WDN team and good evening from Sonoma County, California!

KE6SLS < K6ETA Kewl beans… must’ve been fun! Good condx for the second half of the net and the first was only rough along the
coat as often happens this time of year. Great… if you need a fill on the early part lemme know. Thanks for all your thoughts and
feedback. It helps!  73 de K6ETA dit dit.

rg.    I just looked over my copy, looks like I got part of Bruces FLamp, and part of a radiogram, that is all, and then I see an
FLmsg from u <the roster> and HHE sent out an FLmsg.  so good deal.  have a great night om!

Hi Steve,

One question I did not copy an answer:

#2 — How does one indicate a radiogram to non-ham at check in t

WDN?

K6ETA de KB7VX

KB7VX < K6ETA Good question Bruce. My flippant answer is Winlink! Ha! Otherwise I’m open to suggestions! < K6ET

K6ETA de KB7VX

 Ok, Steve , but I am sending some radiograms via WDN for practice purposes.

Sometimes would like to send to a non-ham and see how long it takes to
reach the party.  At check in you ask for # TFC and callsign. If no call sign, then
should I only send via Winlink. IE is non ham traffic not appropriate on WDN?

K6ETA de KB7VX

KB7VX < K6ETA I would say the mission is to pass traffic for hams who have no other way of reaching out. IF the traffic is for a
non-ham, Email address instead of callsign… that would be MUCH simpler than trying to rely on NTS to do all the rest. The
message would get there faster too.

NOW IF the recipient is also off-grid, then things get tricky no matter what. We can’t send pidgeons or ponies… the radio and
internet need to do the work.    <  K6ETA / NCS

 Rn P RR tu  Another thought,   if the msg is totally complete in address phone   u can just send 1 TFC GenPub  or something like
that  Public  Civil      NCS doesn’t have to mess with it   it should deliver easily if the address phone are correct  btu   < K7KY

K7KY < K6ETA

Just so we’re clear… WDN does not send messages through NTS. We only use NTSD (the digital arm) and only IF that’s the best
way to forward the message!  IF there’s an easier way (email) why whould we do that? The only answer is a huge outage… and
that will slow theNTSD folks down, BUT it should still get through. <K6ETA

K6ETA  < K7KY IC I didnt’ understand the NTSD & NTS    I thought when it went into NTSD it was in the NTS System and
came out at another net that would deliver    my only NTS exeperience is Phone     Beaver State NTS Net   sri    < K7KY

K7KY < K6ETA I’m not exactly even a novice at NTS… my dad does the phone NTS and a good friend at the other end of a packet
backbone does NTSD. Joe AG6QO. He says if the message is formatted to NTSD standards, it will go AUTOMATICALLY with zero
human intervention for 90% of the journey.  If the last mile is via phone telephone, USMail, etc., it will just be slower accordinglyly.

I think the voice NTS folks do get involved for that ‘last mile’ pretty often, but don’t ask me how!  I will try to school up, but for now
I’m just sending along via Packet.

orXxEnje]R@uRR Steve & Bruce      IC    years back we wanted to pass NTS traffic into the system digitally, but they told us the
digital forwarding was basically backbone and we could not hv access.      Beaver State Net does delliver messages all over the
coast and accepts msgs for delivery elsewhere   they do this every night   we worked with them a couple years, but that’s all we
know abt NTS   ove to Bruce   < K7KY

K7KY < K6ETA OK, Doug, yeah my Dad is on the Golden Bear Net doing NTS all the time. It does work, but I wouldn’t select it over
email unless I had to. I like the way Winlink uses RF for only as far as it’s absolutely  needed and then once there’s a freeway
onramp, the dirt roads are left behind! So I would say if WDN can hit a freeway onramp for those we serve, why continue up the
dirt or gravel road?    <  K6ETA

RR I agree… I’m having to rethink some of my assumptions now…  ORCA has avoided suggestins that we use internet
to speed up ck-in and share ck-in with those on line where they can also ck-in by web… we wanted to stay with the systems wwe
know we’ll have in the worst of times  so we’ve not wanted to use the net    for WDN it ‘s a different case and I’ll have to loosen
up my marbles b4 we go too far..(-:       I think its working out well   and now I understand…  btu   < K7KY

K7KY < K6ETA Heh, yeah, well I like to stay ‘on-mission’ for things like this and here’s the mission so far

— In times of poor voice propagation;
— In circumstances where accurate information needs to get through;
— To pass non-trivial traffic and QSTs to participating stations;
— To relay non-trivial information to remote stations;
— And to relay traffic for stations in challenging situations.

I’d say the fastest way to accomplish those for our ‘clients’ IS the mission…?

Steve the small font is better as ur using it pre tx  but for ck-in the large horizontal font is better   u notice Larry
N7SND sent small vertical tonite    the horizontal stays all visible until it disappears  but horiz    loses some characters quickly  NCS
is not always watching the wf   all the time and the big horiz text is easier to notice at least for these old eyes   time to quit    <
