Welcome to the Western Digital HF Net.

This new West-of-the-Rockies digital traffic net endeavors to reach out to Amateur radio stations and provide
traffic relay service:

— In times of poor voice propagation;
— In circumstances where accurate information needs to get through;
— To pass non-trivial traffic and QSTs to participating stations;
— To relay non-trivial information to remote stations;
— And to relay traffic for stations in challenging situations.

We serve the entire amateur radio community and can use our NBEMS capabilities and relay locations to assist
voice nets, mobile stations, QRP stations and to check DX and propagation. We are not an end-to-end system
like NTS, we are an FLDigi-based relay net for those using sound card systems. Our ops may volunteer to
forward your traffic beyond our net, however that is not our primary mission.

All stations are welcomed.

IMPORTANT: This net has only two check-in “precedence” types: Priority and Routine. It will be assumed that
your traffic is Routine unless the Priority word is added. PLEASE ONLY USE PRIORITY FOR URGENT TRAFFIC. We
will drop everything and deal with that traffic before anything else.

HOW TO BREAK
If you need to break in, there are two methods. You can send a brief TUNE signal in between any TX or you can
use Video ID just above or below *only when any station other than NCS is TXing.*  NCS will acknowledge your
break immediately to see what you need.

HOW TO SEND TRAFFIC AND QSTs
Please keep your traffic as brief as possible! Following the conventions established by the ORCA Net, longer
QSTs should be sent via FLAmp or FLMessage. Shorter traffic may be sent by KBD or FLMsg.

Please check in and use the ORCA conventions for pre-tune (to prevent doubles), Video ID and KBD to send the
following:

CALL  Name  [ Priority  |  QRU  |  QST  |  (#)TFC for CALLSIGN  | Relay (relayed call) ]

QTC can also be used in place of TFC above as here they both mean “I have Traffic.”

You will be acknowledged by NCS and your traffic will be queued.

Once the traffic round is complete, NCS will call each station who have QSTs.

After the QST Round, we will call stations in the roster sequence to comment on the mission and format of this
net, ask NCS any questions or volunteer to help with the new Net.

So any check-ins (again, pre-tune or use Video ID) please come now. < K6ETA / NCS

WEST OF ROCKIES COVID 19 UPDATE

(Note: the cases below have been reported by the news media and exceed CDC verified cases above.)

Washington State has 75 confirmed cases and it is believed that community spread is happening in the Seattle
area. A Facebook employee in Seattle has tested positive.

Oregon has 2 confirmed cases in the Portland area – these have been isolated. It is unknown whether there is
community spread anywhere in Oregon, and there’s no reason to suspect that at present.

Utah has confirmed one isolated case and is investigating 5 potential cases in the Salt Lake area.

Arizona has 2 confirmed cases in isolation.

California has 60 confirmed cases not including a quarantined cruise liner off the coast with 21 confirmed cases
aboard.

Community spread is likely in Solano County and may have reached the greater SF Bay Area.

California has declared an emergency over the coronavirus outbreak, as tests continued Thursday.

Los Angeles has 6 confirmed cases and has declared a state of emergency.

Isolated cases have been identified in Placer County, Eureka, San Diego.

:mg:1123 Two obscure Tips for FLDIGI Macros:

1) I found an undocumented control character that prints a solid right arrow on macro buttons. ‘@#’. I add ‘@#’
b4 the TEXT to put the solid arrow left of the text on buttons that call other macro sets. It makes them stand
out from all other buttons.

2) I also found an anomaly with the Macro Editor in addressing for the <FILE> TAG. It probably applies to the
<IMAGE> TAG and any TAG that requires a file address.  I made a new macro set named, ‘nets.mdf’. When
executed, it failed to call the .mdf file. The Parser had deleted ‘/n’ from the address (…/macros/nets.mdf),
changing the address(…/macrosets.mdf) and breaking the macro. ‘/n’ turns out to be a control character and
the Parser immediately deletes it from the address.  The Parser is case sensitive, so changing ‘nets.mdf’ to
NETS.mdf fixed the problem. I think this is an anomaly, not a bug.  It won’t happen often and is easy to remedy
when you know how it works.

Here’s my WESTERN DIGITAL NET ck-in macro:

Del Norte, Humboldt, & Mendocino have all called an official public health emergencies to ready themselves for
further outbreak of the Convid19–also several tribes have followed suit.

At out Tuesday night ham meeting, we started the new elbow bump and no-touch policy.  This ham is keeping a
very close eye on local news since it might soon be strongly advised to remain away of any groups.

No solar charging today–murky and misty with rain coming next 3-4 days.

Had an odd adventure with my SignalinkUSB yesterday.  Would not PTT.  Short answer is something touched
either my kernel or loaded modules, opening alsamixer and viewing the signalink solved the issue, even thought
I didn’t make any adjustments.  BEWARE, there be grimlins EVERYWHERE! 🙂

Have become an even bigger fan of my new Delta Vee antenna.  NCS was very light copy, yet 100% solid print.
I would not have been able to hear him over local noise with my old inverted Vee antenna.

Started hearing VERY wide digital signal across the entire spectrum at 8pm, so far, not affecting WDN.

Read that the DSN* 70m antenna is going to be re-built over the next 11 months.  The Voyager(s) are going to
be placed on “auto pilot” but NASA will still be able to copy all their space data with smaller arrays linked.  But
NASA will not be able to talk to the craft until the NEW & IMPROVED 70m antenna is complete with new
transmitters.

Tnx to all the WDN folks!

The band was up and down tonight.  It was very hard to copy most stations (K7KY and W7ZAP and local stations
were strong). Keeps us on our toes!

It has been a very unusual couple of days. The university is starting to put travel restrictions in place and we are
now coming up with plans for how we will continue teaching if campuses are closed. We are currently looking at
potentially conducting classes online, but this does not work well for some classes, particularly labs.

You can read more at: https://www.ksl.com/article/46725225/covid-19-concerns-utah-colleges-canceling-travel-
calling-back-students-studying-abroad

We are watching the Covid-19 outbreak very closely.  So far we are OK here in Utah, but that can change very
quickly.

Stay safe and healthy!

and pick up tips to run a smooth traffic net… Nice work Steve 🙂  Stn at 1850/1900 is de-sensing NCS’ signal.

Great to see all on the WF tonite.

never kept me from decoding others on the net… sri it hampered u and good to know.

At the last minute, my wife decided NOT to take AMTRAK to see her cousin in Santa Rosa CA and is staying
home because of the corona virus.
Actually, her cousin decided it for her — did not want cousin from WA to visit her.
AMTRAK refunded her ticket after first saying that they wouid NOT. But my wife WAS PERSISTENT and told
them she was
doing everyone a favor by not risking the spread of the virus. The supervisor then gave her a new
ETICKET good for one year.

UTAH statations all booming in here tonight along with K7KY and W7ZAP about 90%

. NCS about 70-80% copy. I am experimenting tonight with a 40 foot vertical
fed with 450 ohm ladder line and 16 radials.

Thank you for participating in the Western Digital Net!

With ops like you we are able to use or NBEMS skills to offer a real service to the Amateur Radio community.

We would like to thank Doug K7KY and Mindy W7ZAP and all the ops from the ORCA Net for training and
developing the many conventions and skills we use here. Please check out the ORCA Net at this time (0330
ZULU) and frequency every Tuesday night!

We also encourage any and all ops who wish to provide fills, test modes, macros, etc., to hold this frequency
after the net. Hopefully this time and place on the band will become a known ‘watering hole’ for all digital ops.

Thanks from the WDN team and good evening from Sonoma County, California!

KE6SLS de KB7VX

Well I am told that 16 radials is the equivalent of 95% efficiency.  Actually, the report I read said 99% efficiency
with 16 radials
and then to go to 100% you need 100 radials. Hi Hi

Thanks for the report Jaye!!!

Your Delta Vee is booming in here

KE6SLS de KB7VX

KB7VX de KE6SLS cool enough.  I think I loose some forward gaimurtnon, but the lack of noise makes even the
weak signals just jump out.  I put that into my report tonight. all stations were copied direct.  So I am pleased.   I
wish I had a HUGE place so I could build a better transmitting vee, then I could have a bit better forward gain.
Then I would add a few wire yagis and be in pig, I mean HAM heaven! 🙂   heehee.

Okay om, just wanted to give you my report.  I hope that works well even in the wind for you.  It isn’t a good
NVIS antenna, but it kicks but on DX and if you built it with a match network, then you can cover a bunch of
band2n and the take off angle will impress you!

Okay, better qrt for a bit and warm up some used su%a ru !
