< K6ETA / NCS

Welcome to the Western Digital HF Net.

This West-of-the-Rockies digital traffic net endeavors to reach out to Amateur radio stations and provide traffic relay
service:

— In times of poor voice propagation;
— In circumstances where accurate information needs to get through;
— To pass non-trivial traffic and QSTs to participating stations;
— To relay non-trivial information to remote stations;
— And to relay traffic for stations in challenging situations.

We serve the entire amateur radio community and can use our NBEMS capabilities and relay locations to assist voice
nets, mobile stations, QRP stations and to check DX and propagation. We are not an end-to-end system like NTS, we
are an FLDigi-based relay net for those using sound card systems. We can also forward your traffic beyond our net
(see below).

All stations are welcomed.

IMPORTANT: It will be assumed that your traffic is Routine (no need to announce Routine) unless the Priority word is
added. PLEASE ONLY USE PRIORITY FOR URGENT TRAFFIC. We will drop everything and deal with that traffic before
anything else.

HOW TO BREAK
If you need to break in, there are two methods. You can send a brief TUNE signal in between any TX or you can use
Video ID just above or below only NCS is not TXing. NCS will acknowledge your break immediately to see what you
need.

HOW TO SEND TRAFFIC AND QSTs
Please keep your traffic as brief as possible! Following the conventions established by the ORCA Net, longer QSTs
should be sent via FLAmp or FLMessage. Shorter traffic may be sent by KBD or FLMsg.

When you check in use Pre-Tune or Video ID (to prevent doubles) then, if clear, send the following:

URCALL URName [ Priority | QRU | QNX | QST | (#) QTC for CALLSIGN | Relay ]

NOTE: If you have traffic that needs to be forwarded beyond this net, check in with:
“URCALL URName 1 QTC WL2K”
“URCALL URName 1 QTC BBS”
“URCALL URName 1 QTC Email”
or (only if you know what you are doing):
“URCALL URName 1 QTC for NTS”

Please wait to be acknowledged. Traffic and QSTs will be queued.

Once the traffic round is complete, NCS will call each station who have QSTs. Comments will follow.

So any check-ins please come now. < K6ETA / NCS

BK

OK, before we move to QSTs, here’s a brief message

ANNOUNCEMENTS

1] The WDN is adopting the use of QNX as an equivalent of “In & Out”. It is important to note that:

• QRU implies you are still active in the net for performing relays and being included in the Comments Round.

• QNX implies that you are not active and either monitoring only or no longer on frequency. You will not be included in
the Comments Round unless you re-check with an active option.

QN signals were created for CW nets and are not as well-known in general – so WDN will not be adopting any other of
these QNx codes as a check-in option in order to avoid confusion.

2] To clarify the use of QTC on WDN, please only use QTC for directed messages to no more than three callsigns.
The callsigns listed should be for participating WDN stations that have either already checked in or are expected to
check-in to that evening’s net.

If you have a QTC that will be forwarded beyond the WDN, please use WL2K, BBS, Email or NTS in place of the
callsign. You will include the callsign or email address at the top of your message.

QSTs are announcements to the whole WDN roster plus any stations that may be monitoring in the background. It is
assumed that the QST is meant for WDN stations as well as any inactive stations who may be monitoring.

I usually work five digital nets. Occasionally, I see stations sending VidID while NCS is transmitting. These stations may
not realize FLDIGI cannot listen and transmit at once. The signal-trace on the waterfall is a menu-selectable simulation,
not a reflection of your actual signal. If you want to contact NCS by VidID, only send it when NCS is not transmitting.
NCS can see VidIDs while copying another station on net frequency, but not while transmitting.

K6ETA’s signal has been widely up & down tonight, however, maintained 100% copy on him.

I have noticed that encoding an FLmsg into an FLamp message adds a huge overhead. Just FYI.

Great weather today, lots of sun and temperature reached 70 degrees here. Station batteries fully charged. At
one point, I decided to read my latest QST on the porch and enjoy some sunshine. Noticed at one point I had been
joined by both my little furry tigers! Obviously, pussy cats are ALSO solar powered! 🙂

No new Covid19 cases here, stable-ish at 52 in Humboldt county. Sadly, I had to fetch perishable food and my mail
and noticed far too many people taking zero precautions, no gloves nor masks. Being this far into this pandemic, it is
obvious the disease will be with us, and continue spreading, due to these reckless and dangerous citizens.

Today I attempted to send my first small picture attachment using winlink. Three different attempts made, but three
different winlink nodes faile2d to assemble attachment. Hmmm. Will try again and see if it will always fail. Messages
make it through without fail. The picture was a small PNG about 7kb. Test test test.

Humboldt ARC is trying to figure out a way to remain “hunkered down” while performing Field Day. We are doing over
the air planning now.
Need to stop using, I noticed at one point! 🙂

Thanks for the net and all the good work you do.

Band condx like these give lots of relay practice. It easier to cope with tough condx when the roster is light. I appreciat
e indenting QNX stations on the roster. Makes the Active stations easy to track. Nice net, Steve. TU < K7KY
BTN < K7KY

K7KY < K6ETA / NCSOK FB Doug –and I entered Larry as QNX because even TWO relays and he was still a tough copy
BUT maybe the band is better for him now.

Before we close ‘er up, any further business for the net? < K6ETA / NCS

Thank you for participating in the Western Digital Net!

With ops like you we are able to use our NBEMS skills to offer a real service to the Amateur Radio community.

We would like to thank Doug K7KY and Mindy W7ZAP and all the ops from the ORCA Net for training and developing
the many conventions and skills we use here. Please check out the ORCA Net at this time (0330 ZULU) and frequency
every Tuesday night!

We also encourage any and all ops who wish to provide fills, test modes, macros, etc., to hold this frequency after the
net. Hopefully this time and place on the band will become a known ‘watering hole’ for all digital ops.

Thanks from the WDN team and good evening from Sonoma County, California!

K6ETA de KB6HOH OK Steve FB and G to you guys. Just woke up from a short nap. Hi!
I thought I would jump on here and see whats going on. e[urtFuFYI I sold the KW TS-790A Tribander today.
so that $$$ is going into the Kitty Bank. Anyway how was you Net tonight.

KB6HOH < K6ETA Tonight we had a light roster and challenging condx at the beginning. I learned that THOR22 doesn’t
always cut it as opposed to letting a stronger station relay in a faster mode.

It was hard to know who was copying whom for awhile, so those calls can be hard to make. But thanks to Doug, Mindy
and others it all got done. BTU < K6ETA / NCS

K6ETA de KB6HOH OK Steve KOOL! I just had a idea that Rob K6RGI put out regarding our Simplex test from a couple
of weeks ago but if you didnt get the MS Word file he threw together its a Circuit Merit report on who could hear who
with the rating from zero to five. might make a interesting test for those folks to report to NCS who they could hear. I
think Rob based it off the ICS-214 form BUT Im not 100% sure on that. Or maybe Im just dreaming Hi~
So BTU Steve K6ETA de KB6HOH k

KB6HOH < K6ETA Yes I sent in my reports and they ended up on the big spreadsheet. I did get a chance to see that.
Pretty much as I thought but with a few surprises. West Marin will always need a repeater I think.

Many ops on ORCA and WDN take the time to report each station’s strength and % of copy, so that’s SUPER helpful!

K6ETA de KB6HOH OK Steve. Well you are way head of me on that. I didnot send in a report. Will try next Tues.
Im really bummed out about Mike KD6LYYU. Ive know him a very long time even before getting licensed in this Hobby.
I use to spend some of my free time down at Beavers Electronics in San Rafael and saw him there buying parts.
He will be sorely missed. He even took me out to lunch at that Diner close to his house at the south end of the Blvd
after helping him I think it was either with Packet or the FLdigi software. Anyway what a crappy day this has turned out to be.
So BTU Steve K6ETA de KB6HOH k

KB6HOH < K6ETA Yeah I like Mike alot. He was super knowledgable, friendly, funny and full of great stories. I was
bummend when his health went south because he was developing a great training program for my ACS unit. Well,
he’s on top of the tower now and I’m sure the view’s great up there!

SO BTU but I gotta run soon. < K6ETA
