< K6ETA / NCS

Welcome to the Western Digital HF Net.

This West-of-the-Rockies digital traffic net endeavors to reach out to Amateur radio stations and provide traffic relay
service:

— In times of poor voice propagation;
— In circumstances where accurate information needs to get through;
— To pass non-trivial traffic and QSTs to participating stations;
— To relay non-trivial information to remote stations;
— And to relay traffic for stations in challenging situations.

We serve the entire amateur radio community and can use our NBEMS capabilities and relay locations to assist voice
nets, mobile stations, QRP stations and to check DX and propagation. We are not an end-to-end system like NTS, we
are an FLDigi-based relay net for those using sound card systems. We can also forward your traffic beyond our net
(see below).

All stations are welcomed.

IMPORTANT: It will be assumed that your traffic is Routine (no need to announce Routine) unless the Priority word is
added. PLEASE ONLY USE PRIORITY FOR URGENT TRAFFIC. We will drop everything and deal with that traffic before
anything else.

HOW TO BREAK
If you need to break in, there are two methods. You can send a brief TUNE signal in between any TX or you can use
Video ID just above or below *only NCS is not TXing.*  NCS will acknowledge your break immediately to see what you
need.

HOW TO SEND TRAFFIC AND QSTs
Please keep your traffic as brief as possible! Following the conventions established by the ORCA Net, longer QSTs
should be sent via FLAmp or FLMessage. Shorter traffic may be sent by KBD or FLMsg.

When you check in use Pre-Tune or Video ID (to prevent doubles) then, if clear, send the following:

URCALL URName [ Priority | QRU | QNX | QST | (#) QTC for CALLSIGN | Relay ]

NOTE: If you have traffic that needs to be forwarded beyond this net, check in with:
“URCALL URName 1 QTC WL2K”
“URCALL URName 1 QTC BBS”
“URCALL URName 1 QTC Email”
“URCALL URName 1 QTC for NTS”

Please wait to be acknowledged. Traffic and QSTs will be queued.

Once the traffic round is complete, NCS will call each station who have QSTs. Comments will follow.

So any check-ins please come now. < K6ETA / NCS

WDN < K6ETA / NCS  OK the roster is lite tonight and we have only one station with a directed QTC

K7KY < K6ETA / NCS  OK thanks and that appears to be in order… will send on the VHF backbone to NTSD tonight!

BK

OK, that’s it for QTCs and now a quick little

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Last week the WDN had an instructive experience in relaying traffic from a weak station. Much of the net was spent
using slower modes to finally copy the message.

After some discussions with other WDN and ORCA ops, we have decided to have the stronger station(s) who have at
least a partial copy move off frequency with the weak station. That way the net can carry on and the message can
be relayed to the net before closing.

If you are a station who has checked in as active and you hear Net Control stuggling to copy a weak station’s traffic,
you can signal your willingness to relay off frequency. If you have a good enough copy on the weak station to do so,
please use Video ID to get the attention of NCS.

Once NCS sees your ID, they will ask if you would like to take the weak station up 10 to relay the message. Once you
have copied the traffic, just re-check into the Net and NCS will RX the relay. You can also re-check into the Net to ask
for help from other stations if you just can’t complete the relay.

Hopefully using this method will get the message through without taking too much time from the Net.

Hundreds of GridEye FDRs monitor the stability of the wide-area grid just as an electrocardiogram measures and
records the electrical activity of the heart to determine its health. Frequency — the number of waves that pass a
fixed point every second — is measured in the hertz unit, named after a German physicist.

Whenever there is a major disturbance, which the U.S. gets one to three times a year, that dance becomes more
violent.”

I’d like to learn if Bruce KB7VX received ack to WDN’s first QTC > NTS. In the WDN website NTS Traffic example, it
appears the sender’s city is printed where the receiver’s zip-code should be.

WDN’s relay tactic should work well.  Passing traffic off-net-freq is a standard Traffic Net tactic.  We’ll reawaken the
Off-Freq-Relay exercise on ORCA. It’s good practice for other digital-traffic operations.

I appreciate all the work Steve has put into WDN and the WDN website. Good work, Steve!  Doug K7KY ot t

fun busy Had 4″ rain in the past 3 days with 2″ in the past 24hrs. Good to ward off fire season.

Interesting SDR post Jaye. Good catch Steve K6ETA and Brad WA7HHE on the FLAMP file not being highlighted…
always learning something useful here

Last night, our normal club VHF net started.  New op, Jason ka6f, told us he was our NCS for the evening and that
he’d be sending out a roster as a CVS file using a new mode which should only take a few seconds.  We have used
MT63-2000l before, which isn’t fast, but it works well over repeaters and simplex.  So I opened FLdigi and readied to
copy 8PSK-500F.  The first shot was a botch, had my squelch too low on FLdigi, but second was a 100%.  I think total
time for the 3.1KB file was 23 seconds!  Even more interesting, FLmsg pops up and now I have a button on there
EXTRACT AS CVS FILE.  I clicked it and proceeded to save the file on my desktop.  Will this is where it got interesting,
it wasn’t a normal FLmsg file name, it was the ROSTER SPREAD SHEET file name.  Clicking on the new file on my
desktop opened openoffice and showed me a perfect roster.  Very VERY impressive!

My trusty Kenwood ts570 finally run into serious issues with audio–completely lost receive audio!  Was interesting
nursing along on digi and phone nets.  Alas, I now have a new Kenwood 590.  Wonderful rig with all the new stuff and
killer front end too.  No longer need the Signalink, and now miss that tool!  Different digital apps drive at different
levels, so now I have to keep a mixer tab open when I switch between the apps.  However, I am DELIGHTED my old
linux box was able to load the drivers for cat control just by switching from 570 to 590!  Good lord I LOVE LINUX!
New rig is more power hungery for my hard to make Solar energy, but I’m working on that too.

More and more hot cases of COVID-19 here in Humboldt.  It IS going to get much worse here and around the US as
more and more angry folks head to bars, cafe’s and the like. PLEASE be careful everyone!

Had lots of clouds, fog, and rain that last week.  This evening, rain broke off, got a bit of sun and should have some
great solar weather tomorrow for my batteries.

Wow, Brad must have a lot of local noise, he’s booming in here, but having problems hearing me and NCS.  Sure glad
I turned my inverted vee into the delta vee–really helps in noisy nights.

Good net tonight, but missing many of our regulars.  Tnx all, 73

Hi Doug. Yes, got your FLAMP QTC 100%. You have a good signal here. You and WA7HHE

. Please relay these comments to WDN:

I am DEEP in the Columbia Gorge on 40 ft vertical at Chamberlain Lake Rest Area on WA SR 14 north side of
Columbia River. There was a high speed chase and shooting death on I-84 near Troutdale and they closed
I-84 all lanes both directions for 8 hours. I was in bumper to bumper traffic jam 5 hrs. Worst traffic jam
in my life. WSP blocked all semi traffic on SR14 trying to go around.  Beautiful River view out of my back door.

Thank you for participating in the Western Digital Net!

With ops like you we are able to use our NBEMS skills to offer a real service to the Amateur Radio community.

We would like to thank Doug K7KY and Mindy W7ZAP and all the ops from the ORCA Net for training and developing
the many conventions and skills we use here. Please check out the ORCA Net at this time (0230 ZULU) and frequency
every Tuesday night!

We also encourage any and all ops who wish to provide fills, test modes, macros, etc., to use this frequency daily.
This time and place on the band is becoming a known ‘watering hole’ for all digital ops.

Thanks from the WDN team and good evening from Sonoma County, California!
