< K6ETA / NCS

Welcome to the Western Digital HF Net.

This West-of-the-Rockies digital traffic net endeavors to reach out to Amateur radio stations and provide traffic relay
service:

— In times of poor voice propagation;
–€” In circumstances where accurate information needs to get through;
–€” To pass non-trivial traffic and QSTs to participating stations;
–€” To relay non-trivial information to remote stations;
— And to relay traffic for stations in challenging situations.

We serve the entire amateur radio community and can use our NBEMS capabilities and relay locations to assist voice
nets, mobile stations, QRP stations and to check DX and propagation. We are not an end-to-end system like NTS, we
are an FLDigi-based relay net for those using sound card systems. We can also forward your traffic beyond our net
(see below).

All stations are welcomed.

IMPORTANT: It will be assumed that your traffic is Routine (no need to announce Routine) unless the Priority word is
added. PLEASE ONLY USE PRIORITY FOR URGENT TRAFFIC. We will drop everything and deal with that traffic before
anything else.

HOW TO BREAK
If you need to break in, there are two methods. You can send a brief TUNE signal in between any TX or you can use
Video ID just above or below *only NCS is not TXing.*  NCS will acknowledge your break immediately to see what you
need.

HOW TO SEND TRAFFIC AND QSTs
Please keep your traffic as brief as possible! Following the conventions established by the ORCA Net, longer QSTs
should be sent via FLAmp or FLMessage. Shorter traffic may be sent by KBD or FLMsg.

When you check in use Pre-Tune or Video ID (to prevent doubles) then, if clear, send the following:

URCALL URName [ Priority | QRU | QNX | QST | (#) QTC for CALLSIGN | Relay ]

NOTE: If you have traffic that needs to be forwarded beyond this net, check in with:
“URCALL URName 1 QTC WL2K”
“URCALL URName 1 QTC BBS”
“URCALL URName 1 QTC Email”
“URCALL URName 1 QTC for NTS”

Please wait to be acknowledged. Traffic and QSTs will be queued.

Once the traffic round is complete, NCS will call each station who have QSTs. Comments will follow.

So any check-ins please come now. < K6ETA / NCS

BK

OK, before we go to QSTs, is there any further directed traffic?    <  K6ETA / NCS

WDN < K6ETA / NCS  OK here’s a first QST

ANNOUNCEMENTS

The WDN encourages ops to try their hand at being a guest Net Control Station. Having several capable NCS ops will
ensure that the net can carry on in an emergency or in the event of the current NCS being unavailable.

Part of the reason we have this traffic net is to keep our capabilities sharp in case the WDN is needed to get
important information through. Not only does having several NCS ops available make that likely to continue, it also
gives ops the experience and confidence to start new nets as needed.

You can also NCS only part of a net such as Check-ins, Traffic Round, QSTs or the Comments Round. It’s really pretty
simple, since macros are provided. No pressure and no commitment required.

If you would like to be a guest NCS, please let us know during the Comments Round. You can also contact Steve
K6ETA at k6eta@comcast.net.

Washington Post:
A research paper from scientists at Los Alamos National Laboratory, not yet peer-reviewed, reports that one strain of
the novel coronavirus has emerged in Europe and become dominant around the planet, leading the researchers to
believe the virus has mutated to become more contagious.
The bold hypothesis, however, was immediately met with skepticism by many infectious-disease experts, and there is
no scientific consensus that any of the innumerable mutations in the virus so far have changed the general contagiou
sness or lethality of covid-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus.

Next we go to comments with WA7HHE Brad CEDAR CITY, UT     < K6ETA / NCS

WDN < WA7HHE -Utah is joining other states in opening up our local business, however with strong social distancing
restrictions. An Article in Psychology Today stated self-isolation is equivalent to smoking a pack of cigarettes a day.
Seems like the pandemic is going to get us one way or the other:( So this radio operator put on his mask and went
for a workout at the gym today. Employees and patrons constantly cleaning equipment. Leaving the gym after a 45
minute walk on the treadmill felt like a shot in the arm of well being. That said I continue to watch our county new

W7ZAP has the night off after a long day on the homestead. B4 lockdown, we often ate dinner at the local Noodle
House when our work-day was long. Now, no more resturant noodles.

Our nine two-week old goslings are taking a big bite out of our daily routines. They arrived in a small box about twice
as high as a pizza box.  They must have been crouching down during their time with USPS. Today, they’re huge!
Their heads are above the 1ft wall around their nest.  These Embden Geese will grow to about 25-28lb when mature.
They’ll comprise First Platoon; a self-supporting security team replacing the 100lb German Shepherd.  We’ll see how
they do. Soon, we’ll begin training them to work in a chorus line for lawn mowing efficiency. And, so far, they’re a lot
of fun.

Tight filters also help copy weak stations by improving s/n ratio.

Relaying for WDN ck-in was a bit odd tonite.  I caught a weak and strong station. While I’m copying text to relay, NCS
answered the strong station. Next, Bruce KB7VX relays the weak station.  As designated Relay, I have the net until I
turn it back to NCS. No? (EDIT BY NCS – YES!)

I really wanted to copy Steve W7WSV’s traffic.  It’s an exercise from SATERN Digital Net by Ken AD5XJ. I’d like to try it
too.

Thanks for Western Digital Net, Steve and nice work on the long Relay… Please excuse me early,QNX.  tu
73 to all, Doug K7KY

K7KY < K6ETA / NCS  RR Doug and yes I had my filters as narrow as could be but for some reason Steve is always
tough at this QTH.

K6ETA & WDN de KB7VX

Just a comment regarding Gallup NM, where I worked at Rehoboth McKinley Hospital for
3 months in the late summer and early fall of 2018. Interstate 40 goes right through that
city of 22,000, so to close it off would require blocking all of the on-ramps and off-ramps.
Half of the city is on the north of I-40 and the other half is on the south connected by two
bridges. 70% of the population in  that part of NM is Navajo and 20% is Zuni or Apache,
10% other races. The governor of NM has totally locked that city off from the rest of the
State; but just outside of the city limits, where all of the Indians reside, is sovereign native
American reservation land both on the north and the south; and the Governor has no
 authority there. Virtually all of the permanent residents of Gallup are NOT native Americans;
so what the Governor of NM has actually done is to lock just the non-Indian poppulation
inside the city limits. This is the first time in my memory that a U.S. city has been totally
blockaded from the outside. The Navajos, Zunis, and Apaches will not be able to shop at
Wal-Mart, though, they have their own stores on their respective reservations.
Will this be setting a precedent? Could it happen to San Francisco?

Incidentally, AmRRON seems to have totally abandoned their voice nets.
I am told that this is due to the poor sunspot cycle. Digital nets are saving the day!

Tonight’s TFC for Steve was VERY interesting and reflects the skills of this net! I feel privileged to
have witnessed it!
K6ETA de KB7VX

KB7VX < K6ETA / NCS  OK FB Bruce and I think Katrina pretty much locked down New Orleans… man that was UGLY!
Also, the governors don’t always know what they’re doing any more than any other politician so I say NO to giving
them that power.

OK, I think we won’t torture the net with Steve in AZ any further hi hi, so any last business for the net before we shut
‘er down?    <  K6ETA / NCS

Thank you for participating in the Western Digital Net!

With ops like you we are able to use our NBEMS skills to offer a real service to the Amateur Radio community.

We would like to thank Doug K7KY and Mindy W7ZAP and all the ops from the ORCA Net for training and developing
the many conventions and skills we use here. Please check out the ORCA Net at this time (0230 ZULU) and frequency
every Tuesday night!

We also encourage any and all ops who wish to provide fills, test modes, macros, etc., to use this frequency daily.
This time and place on the band is becoming a known ‘watering hole’ for all digital ops.

Thanks from the WDN team and good evening from Sonoma County, California!
