< K6ETA / NCS

Welcome to the Western Digital Net.

This West-of-the-Rockies digital traffic net endeavors to reach out to Amateur radio stations and provide traffic relay service:

— In times of poor voice propagation;
— In circumstances where accurate information needs to get through;
— To pass non-trivial traffic and QSTs to participating stations;
— To relay non-trivial information to remote stations;
— And to relay traffic for stations in challenging situations.

We serve the entire amateur radio community and can use our NBEMS capabilities and relay locations to assist voice nets, mobile stations, QRP stations and
to check DX and propagation. We are an FLDigi-based relay net for those using sound card systems. We can also forward your traffic beyond our net (see
below).

All stations are welcomed.

IMPORTANT: It will be assumed that your traffic is Routine (no need to announce Routine) unless the Priority word is added. PLEASE ONLY USE PRIORITY FOR
URGENT TRAFFIC. We will drop everything and deal with that traffic before anything else.

HOW TO BREAK
If you need to break in, there are two methods. You can send a brief TUNE signal in between any TX or you can use Video ID just above or below *only when
NCS is not TXing.*  NCS will acknowledge your break immediately to see what you need.

HOW TO SEND TRAFFIC AND QSTs
Please keep your traffic as brief as possible!  Longer QSTs should be sent via FLAmp or FLMessage. Shorter traffic may be sent by KBD or FLMsg.

PLEASE TURN OFF AFC (bottom right of FLDigi)

When you check in use Pre-Tune or Video ID (to prevent doubles) then, if clear, send the following:

URCALL URName [ Priority | QRU | QNX | QST | (#) QTC > CALLSIGN | Relay ]

Please wait to be acknowledged. Traffic and QSTs will be queued.

Once the traffic round is complete, NCS will call each station who have QSTs. Comments will follow.

So any check-ins please come now. < K6ETA / NCS

WDN < K6ETA / NCS  OK seeing none, here’s a brief

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Did you know that we can forward messages beyond our net?

Please let us know at check-in if you have a message that you would like one of us to forward via email, Winlink, packet or NTS.

This should be quite useful in emergency conditions or for portable and remote ops who have no internet access – and we’re happy to be of service!

If you currently have internet access and want to know more, please see:

WDN

Or ask about this during the Comments Round!

BK

Quick question (answer in Comments if you like):  Would you like to see any changes or improvements made to this net?

BK

Though our Solar Flux Index (SFI) is still down at 72, our Sunspot Number is up to 24!  This means the new sunspot cycle has finally begun! Our digital capabilit
ies will still be more effective than voice contacts for the next few years, but things should gradually improve!

<DATA 200 46F1>{5BF6:1}WDN < K7KY  This QST contains some text from ORCA DIGITAL NET on Tuesday. It’s still all I’ve learned of the SATERN Nationwide

Since the SATERN Int’l Digital Net l
<DATA 200 8E19>{5BF6:2}ast Saturday, I’ve heard nothing further about the Nationwide Exercise. I hope we’ll learn more in next Saturday’s Bulletin. I
mistakenly represented the Exercise as sending a message West2Eas
<DATA 200 067B>{5BF6:3}t and then East2West. Ken AD5XJ didn’t intend to send E2W. I added that myself; wishful thinking maybe. My reading comprehens

We were the Western side of this Exercise and we’re grateful to SATERN for including us. There were two challenging ta

In spite of a brutal propagation week, I managed to get two messages directly through to N0LSD.

    unknown outcome so far….
….  With as many people as there are checking in to both ORCA and SATERN nets, it seems like very
    few showed up for this.
<DATA 201 9BA2>{5BF6:15}  There were also people that did show up who were not quite ready for it,

I can appreciate more what you and Mindy have been doing on the ORCA net
<DATA 201 75BF>{5BF6:16}and how it pays off when
needed.  My time on both the ORCA and SATERN nets the last couple years have contributed to my overall

<DATA 201 41A7>{5BF6:20}as also able to send the messages I had already relayed to the Midwest, but
I had to depend on other stations or NetLogger to receive his request for fills and receipt confirmations.

<DATA 201 ADEF>{5BF6:21} …. I was also using much more power than Joe.

I helped one station with Flmsg.  We definitely need more practice digging through the Fldigi directory

Found k7IFG on this afternoon.  Copied some big messages with FLamp
some good alerts using FLmsg.  TU Ken!

A roll of coax showed up today–no idea where it might have come
from 🙂  TU Doug–safe and sound.

My station is slowly coming together.  Parts have been slowly drifting
in via UPS/FedEX/USPS.  Hope to have it up in the next two weeks–
god willin’ and the creek don’t rise!  Unfortunatly, 35 clamps ordered
arrived, all wrong size–but correct ones are on the way.

Did you know most hams use CW or AM to transmit a carrier to tune
there match boxes (tuners)?  There is a MUCH better way.  Instead of
potentally a frequency with AM or CW, use FM!  FM will NOT interfere
with any on-going QSO whether it is a CW, Digital, or phone net! So
be kind, use FM when matching your antennas!

Another tip for all of us.  Turn OFF your Pre_Amp!  Turn down your
RF Gain!  You might even get better results by turning ON your
attenuator!  These measures will slowly kill the back ground noise
and greatly increase your SIGNAL TO NOISE ratios.  My attenuator
is on, my RF gain is now at 6 (0-10).  I’m using no filters at all.
Try it for yourselves, it’s amazing to see the signals pop out of the
noise.  If you note my signal reports, I no longer add my S-meter
readings since turning down the gain throws off the meter.

Another nice day here.  The smoke forecast to hit us today didn’t
arrive!  Clean air RULES 🙂

I hope more of our members will start adding signal reports to their
comments–I hope to have a whole new antenna system up soon and would
love to compare results of before/after!

Thanks for the GREAT net you all.

During the SATERN Exercise, a number of Ops could not locate the received file in their PC file system. If you can’t navigate to the stored files, you can’t edit,
save, and transmit them forward. These tasks are fundamental to handling digital traffic. These tasks are the core of ORCA DIGITAL NET’s weekly FLAMP
Exercise.  Most of you do this every Tuesday evening. For the SATERN Exercise, it was a no-brainer. I hope PC file-manipulation exercises will become more
common on digital training nets. A good grasp of basic computer skills is fundamental to operating a reliable digital station.

I’ve not heard from Bruce KB7VX for a few days. I’m guessing his truck is still stuck in the Chevy dealership shop. Keep Bruce in your thoughts and prayers.
