< K6ETA / NCS

Welcome to the Western Digital HF Net.

This West-of-the-Rockies digital traffic net endeavors to reach out to Amateur radio stations and provide traffic relay service:

— In times of poor voice propagation;
— In circumstances where accurate information needs to get through;
— To pass non-trivial traffic and QSTs to participating stations;
— To relay non-trivial information to remote stations;
— And to relay traffic for stations in challenging situations.

We serve the entire amateur radio community and can use our NBEMS capabilities and relay locations to assist voice nets, mobile stations, QRP stations and to check DX and propagation. We are not an end-to-end system like NTS, we are an FLDigi-based relay net for those using sound card systems. We can also forward your traffic beyond our net (see below).

All stations are welcomed.

IMPORTANT: It will be assumed that your traffic is Routine (no need to announce Routine) unless the Priority word is added. PLEASE ONLY USE PRIORITY FOR URGENT TRAFFIC. We will drop everything and deal with that traffic before anything else.

HOW TO BREAK
If you need to break in, there are two methods. You can send a brief TUNE signal in between any TX or you can use Video ID just above or below *only NCS is not TXing.*  NCS will acknowledge your break immediately to see what you need.

HOW TO SEND TRAFFIC AND QSTs
Please keep your traffic as brief as possible! Following the conventions established by the ORCA Net, longer QSTs should be sent via FLAmp or FLMessage. Shorter traffic may be sent by KBD or FLMsg.

When you check in use Pre-Tune or Video ID (to prevent doubles) then, if clear, send the following:

MYCALL MyName [ Priority | QRU | QNX | QST | (#) QTC for CALLSIGN | Relay ]

NOTE: If you have traffic that needs to be forwarded beyond this net, check in with:
“MYCALL MyName 1 QTC WL2K”
“MYCALL MyName 1 QTC BBS”
“MYCALL MyName 1 QTC Email”
or (**only** if you know what you are doing):
“MYCALL MyName 1 QTC NTS”

Please wait to be acknowledged. Traffic and QSTs will be queued.

Once the traffic round is complete, NCS will call each station who have QSTs. Comments will follow.

So any check-ins please come now. < K6ETA / NCS

BK

OK Looks like we have 4 QSTs for tonight’s net. Before we handle those, is there any directed traffic? pse come now <  K6ETA

WDN < K6ETA OK Hearing none, let’s take a BK for a quick announcement.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

1]  The WDN is adopting the use of QNX as an equivalent of “In & Out”. It is important to note that:

• QRU implies you are still active in the net for performing relays and being included in the Comments Round.

• QNX implies that you are not active and either monitoring only or no longer on frequency. You will not be included in the Comments Round unless you re-check with an active option.

QN signals were created for CW nets and are not as well-known in general – so WDN will not be adopting any other of these QNx codes as a check-in option in order to avoid confusion.

——–

2]  To clarify the use of QTC on WDN, please only use QTC for *directed messages* to no more than three callsigns. The callsigns listed should be for participating WDN stations that have either already checked in or are expected to
check-in to that evening’s net.

If you have a QTC that will be *forwarded* beyond the WDN, please use WL2K, BBS, Email or NTS in place of the callsign. You will include the callsign or email address at the top of your message.

QSTs are announcements to the *whole WDN roster* plus any stations that may be monitoring in the background. It is assumed that the QST is meant for WDN stations as well as any inactive stations who may be monitoring.

All is well here in Chehalis except for no employment. My recruiters have advised me that due to nation wide lowhospital census, numerous hospitals are laying off staff, 20% of rural hospitals are closing

. Temporary or locum tenens workers are apparently not needed at this time, so I am among the unemployed.

Next for comments is Brad WA7HHE. Take it away Brad.

WDN < K7KY

Working WDN, I’ve had difficulty with TxID. I turn it off b4 net and have all my WDN macros begin w/<TXRSID:off>. Still, later in the net, I find TxID again active.  I’ve not been able to discover what turns it back on w/o my input.  Today, I put the question to the NBEMS forum.  John KS6M has also posted this question w/o reply.  We’ll see if anyone know about this or we have to petition Dave W1HKJ directly (-:

The answer isn’t in FLMSG Config; that tab only controls RxID.  If you know what turns TxID on w/o Operator input, I’d dearly like to know.

All good here for Mindy & I.  These days are much like any spring for us.  Greenhouse, seedling starts, pruning (late), etc.  We’re mostly homebodies anyway.

Not exactly a stable tactic, but this sometimes works: When filling a couple blocks in difficult condx, you can input the missing blocks more than once, ie: 3,3,4,4, or 3,4,3,4. Sometimes, FLAMP does exactly what you want and sometimes it just ignores the extra numbers.  Why, I don’t know, but it works about half the time.

Tomorrow everyone is required to where face masks in Humboldt as we try to deal with reducing isolation at the end of the month.  I am still amazed at how many people are using nothing for themselves, and obviously for others.  Even store employees.  This is going to be a difficult year for so many Americans I fear.

Had a mostly foggy day here, but got a couple hours of sun this PM so batteries got some solar love juice 🙂

Bruce kb7vx was touch and go with some hearty fades, but by gosh, 100%.  Hang in there Bruce!

Today I rose just after sunrise and prepared for shopping at Costco.  I am no longer used to getting up this early and tonight I am REALLY feeling it!

BTW, does anyone know what an Ahso is?  I used to sell them in my shop years ago.  No one in Humboldt seems to carry them, or even know what they are.  Funny how times change. My ahso is over 25 years old and it’s finally time to find a new one! 🙂

Hope all are well.

Does anyone have any last random comments or business for the net? Monitoring stations welcomed too!    <  K6ETA

Thank you for participating in the Western Digital Net!

With ops like you we are able to use our NBEMS skills to offer a real service to the Amateur Radio community.

We would like to thank Doug K7KY and Mindy W7ZAP and all the ops from the ORCA Net for training and developing the many conventions and skills we use here. Please check out the ORCA Net at this time (0230 ZULU) and frequency every Tuesday night!

We also encourage any and all ops who wish to provide fills, test modes, macros, etc., to hold this frequency after the net. Hopefully this time and place on the band will become a known ‘watering hole’ for all digital ops.

Thanks from the WDN team and good evening from Sonoma County, California!

My family moved to France for a year when I was 12.  I went to a small school with ~ 35 kids in 8th grade.  There were 8 Roberts.  We joked about doing 4 part harmony when a teacher said “Bob.”  That’s when I decided on Rob.
