WDN < K6ETA / NCS

< K6ETA / NCS

Welcome to the Western Digital Net.

This West-of-the-Rockies digital traffic net endeavors to reach out to Amateur radio stations and provide traffic relay service:

— In times of poor voice propagation;
— In circumstances where accurate information needs to get through;
— To pass non-trivial traffic and QSTs to participating stations;
— To relay non-trivial information to remote stations;
— And to relay traffic for stations in challenging situations.

We serve the entire amateur radio community and can use our NBEMS capabilities and relay locations to assist voice nets, mobile stations, QRP stations and to
check DX and propagation. We are not an end-to-end system like NTS, we are an FLDigi-based relay net for those using sound card systems. We can also
forward your traffic beyond our net (see below).

All stations are welcomed.

IMPORTANT: It will be assumed that your traffic is Routine (no need to announce Routine) unless the Priority word is added. PLEASE ONLY USE PRIORITY FOR
URGENT TRAFFIC. We will drop everything and deal with that traffic before anything else.

HOW TO BREAK
If you need to break in, there are two methods. You can send a brief TUNE signal in between any TX or you can use Video ID just above or below *only when
NCS is not TXing.*  NCS will acknowledge your break immediately to see what you need.

HOW TO SEND TRAFFIC AND QSTs
Please keep your traffic as brief as possible!  Longer QSTs should be sent via FLAmp or FLMessage. Shorter traffic may be sent by KBD or FLMsg.

When you check in use Pre-Tune or Video ID (to prevent doubles) then, if clear, send the following:

URCALL URName [ Priority | QRU | QNX | QST | (#) QTC > CALLSIGN | Relay ]

NOTE: If you have traffic that needs to be forwarded beyond this net, check in with:
“URCALL URName 1 QTC > WL2K”
“URCALL URName 1 QTC > BBS”
“URCALL URName 1 QTC > Email”
“URCALL URName 1 QTC > NTS”

Please wait to be acknowledged. Traffic and QSTs will be queued.

Once the traffic round is complete, NCS will call each station who have QSTs. Comments will follow.

So any check-ins please come now. < K6ETA / NCS

WDN < K6ETA / NCS  OK it looks like there’s no formal traffic, so let’s move to QSTs starting with

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Next Thursday 7-30-2020 I will be driving to Spokane to help my son move. The nest will be 2/3 empty!

It’s a fairly simple net – just take check-ins, build the roster and call folks in order!

If no one steps in, perhaps everyone can do mode shootouts or just have a simple Comments round?

SO if anyone would like to be NCS for the next Net, please chime in as a QST or in the Comments Round!

BK

Carl has dug two of the four holes needed for my HF antenna upgrade.  I’m getting excited!  Hope to nearly double my forward gain on 75/80M & 20M.  Farm
stores are great places to find 24 foot masts–they call them fencing rails, I call them self supporting wire masts! 🙂  Hope to get it all on the air some time next
week.

Some exciting news from ARRL: https://www.qsotodayhamexpo.com/
This is an ONLINE hamfest & expo!  Register tonight and you are might win a prize!
Looks really fun.  I think it’s August 8th.

Had a fair day, lots of marine layer, but finally got a few hours of sun.  Batteries
are good to go.

Covid cases rising steady.  Fears are that it will get worse here, second link in my QST. 🙁

Have been eating zucchini the last few days, only 2/3’s through the monster, but gosh is it GOOOOOOOD!  Oh yeah, neighbor daughter brought over 3 huge
slices of fresh zucchini bread–still hot from the oven.  WOW!

Started a new program to help mentor our new hams.  Hopefully we can get all the new hams ON THE AIR asap and keep them interested and active.  Nothing
worse than seeing 6 new hams and never hearing them on any ham bands 🙁

Since your running the COMMENTS ROUND Brad, you can call on Steve before sending your own!

Doug, Tnx for the UPDATE on Bruce.  Sure hope he gets the rig back soon.

WA7HHE < K6ETA / NCS  RR and thanks agn for running Comments. In the future one of the fun things abt doing that is u get to reply briefly to each Comment
if u wish!

OK, I am in need of an NCS for next week. Would anyone like to give it a try? If so, I have a page with instructions, both easy and more involved for thos who
care to go further:

NCS

Anyone want to give it a try next week? Pse come now    < K6ETA / NCS

WDN < K6ETA / NCS  Hahaha it reminds mme of the SGT asking for a volunteer to take one step forward and the WHOLE SQUAD takes one step back!  Ha!

Well, I guess we’ll just see what happens next week then! At least those who show up should offer to relay maessages for anyone enlse on freq

BK

Jay, since u are helping out new aHams, pse feel free to use this guide I wrote last year:

http://k6eta.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Getting_to_Know_Ham_Radio_v3.pdf

It’s a PDF that takes new Hams into what’s next once they get their Tech.

ßnzI overheard @ the watering hole that one of the ORCA veterans might be willing to run WDN next week, but is waiting to let a volunteer have the opportunit
y first…    we’ll see to it that someone runs the net 4 u Steve   btn  < K7KY

K7KY < K6ETA / NCS  RR and thanks Doug.  The only reason I was trying to get someone to step up is it would be less chaotic if everyone knows who will take
the next net… BUT it’s also a great test to see if the net can organize itself after or during an emergency when its not for sure that ANYONE will be able to come
up on frequency!  So I see it as a win-win either way.

If I could run 80M mobile while driving a van through Eastern Oregon I would listen in for sure!

Thank you for participating in the Western Digital Net!

With ops like you we are able to use our NBEMS skills to offer a real service to the Amateur Radio community.

We would like to thank Doug K7KY and Mindy W7ZAP and all the ops from the ORCA Net for training and developing the many conventions and skills we use
here. Please check out the ORCA Net at this time (0230 ZULU) and frequency every Tuesday night!

We also encourage any and all ops who wish to provide fills, test modes, macros, etc., to use this frequency daily. This time and place on the band is becoming
a known ‘watering hole’ for all digital ops.

Thanks from the WDN team and good evening from Sonoma County, California!

k6eta de ke6sls    fb Steve,

I’ll take a stab at NCS next week.   I can’t know for sure what will be happening,
but if I commit now, I should be able to curve another commitments.  Would be a good
test for me.  So that’s all.   Throughing in my hat ..

you can’t hear everyone, etc. Thanks OM!
