< K6ETA / NCS

Welcome to the Western Digital Net.

This West-of-the-Rockies digital traffic net endeavors to reach out to Amateur radio stations and provide traffic relay service:

— In times of poor voice propagation;
— In circumstances where accurate information needs to get through;
— To pass non-trivial traffic and QSTs to participating stations;
— To relay non-trivial information to remote stations;
— And to relay traffic for stations in challenging situations.

We serve the entire amateur radio community and can use our NBEMS capabilities and relay locations to assist voice nets, mobile stations, QRP stations and to check DX
and propagation. We are not an end-to-end system like NTS, we are an FLDigi-based relay net for those using sound card systems. We can also forward your traffic
beyond our net (see below).

All stations are welcomed.

HOW TO BREAK
If you need to break in, there are two methods. You can send a brief TUNE signal in between any TX or you can use Video ID just above or below *only when NCS is not
TXing.*  NCS will acknowledge your break immediately to see what you need.

HOW TO SEND TRAFFIC AND QSTs
Please keep your traffic as brief as possible!  Longer QSTs should be sent via FLAmp or FLMessage. Shorter traffic may be sent by KBD or FLMsg.

When you check in use Pre-Tune or Video ID (to prevent doubles) then, if clear, send the following:

URCALL URName [ Priority | QRU | QNX | QST | (#) QTC > CALLSIGN | Relay ]

NOTE: If you have traffic that needs to be forwarded beyond this net, check in with:
“URCALL URName 1 QTC > WL2K”
“URCALL URName 1 QTC > BBS”
“URCALL URName 1 QTC > Email”
“URCALL URName 1 QTC > NTS”

Please wait to be acknowledged. Traffic and QSTs will be queued.

Once the traffic round is complete, NCS will call each station who have QSTs. Comments will follow.

So any check-ins please come now. < K6ETA / NCS

WDN < K6ETA OK FB  and it looks like there’s no formal traffic tonight.

BK

Before we start with QSTs,

ANNOUNCEMENTS

The WDN would like to assist in the SATERN exercise that is attempting to forward an ICS-213 form complete with route audit info over to Buffalo, NY using only FLDigi,
FLMsg and FLAMP. If you are interested in relaying this file, please read the brief instructions here:

https://qso.com/satern/exercise.html

I will send this message DURING tonight’s Net as a QST. In fact, I will send it right after this message. All stations wishing to assist please send your FLAmp Report in your
order on the Roster. (please use pre-tune if you think doubles are likely).

There’s no commitment after you receive this, only a test to see if we can get this to the East Coast over the next few days.

So all stations please standby for a QST in MFSK64.

OK, that completes the transfer of the SATERN message. Please use any Nets, contacts or other means using ONLY FLDigi and the FLMsg, FLAmp as per the instructions
on the exercise.

BK

It’s ok to use whatever means you want (internet, cellphone, etc. ) to ARRANGE A SKED to then send the file via NBEMS software, but you must use FLDigi to do the actual
relay of the file.  Hopefully it will reach Buffalo NY whitout too much ado.

Linux directories are named similarly enough to recognize, but not exactly

To learn this, I noted the full address for both folders and checked it until I knew it by heart.

One quick comment to some of our friends who have trouble copying yet put in a good TX.  NOISE is the leading cause of such issues, especially LOCAL Noise.  If you are
wresting with that, there are many things to try. Too much to cover here, but if u have trouble every week yet we hear u fine, please try to solve that instead of waiting

As far as I know, the SATERN Nationwide Digital Exercise ICS-213 has not yet arrived to Joe N0LSD in New York. I hear some stations near Joe had the msg the following
AM. Joe’s station is QRP. I was unaware of this. As this is a learning/training exercise, it’s all good. My preference for the first evolution would be full pwr stations at both
ends, but it’s easy to conceive of circumstances where we would all be using minimal pwr. The East2West evolution will resolve to my station.

WDN has now had two Guest NCS. The difference between Steve N6ETA’s nets and those of the Guests were just nuance. Steve’s net-structure is clear and easy to follow.
Now, anyone interested in running any portion or the full net has two more sources of support. Jaye KE6SLS & me. NCS does require concentration and focus, but it’s not
rocket science.  You can begin by just running ck-in to get a feel for it. You’re among friends and colleagues; we all started from not-knowing-how. Better to learn these
routines w/o the stress of emergency conditions.

I didn’t hear from Bruce KB7VX this week. He must still be parked at the auto dealer waiting to have his engine replaced.

Thanks for adding WDN to the SATERN Exercise, Steve.  Now, I get to work the message too (-:  And, thanks for the net!

Will I’ve had a 3kw matchbox (tuner) for a 4 days.  First the roller

had a strobe effect–learned the ANTENNA wafer switch failed.  As
you might think by now, my opinion of Ameritron matchboxes has
wained.  New switch on it’s way.  Grrrrrr

Have been getting my car serviced and new tires installed.  One must
be very sure that your service center is REALLY rotating the tires,
especially if you drive a front wheel car.  Car is ready for another
5 years of wet Humboldt roads.  🙂

Has ANYONE been in touch with Bruce kb7vx?  I’m starting to get pretty
worried about him and his hostel working conditions!!

Wx here was marine layer all week.  ALL WEEK!  But today it finally
broke off about 2pm and we have some nice sun and breezes.

I ran the WDN last week.  It was a real challenge, but also a lot of
fun.  I think I managed pretty well and want to thank Doug k7ky for
being my backup RELAY station.  I hope another member will step up for
a night as WDN NCS! Bet you’ll do GREAT!

SATERN exercise is competing with the QSO TODAY ham fest!  I want to
be very active in both!  I hope all of you are aware of the ONLINE
virtual ham expo.  I’ll paste the link below.  this looks like a LOT
of FUN!
https://www.qsotodayhamexpo.com/speakers.html

I’m going to resurrect my delta V antenna.  This antenna is GREAT at
killing noise and getting signals into your receiver.  If anyone is
interested, I can send details.  A Delta Vee is a SHORTED out inverted
Vee antenna!  Oh btw, I’m using an RF gain setting (0-10) of 6.  I
just noticed I also have my ATT (attenuator) active this whole net.
This is probably why I an hearing all the stations so well tonight.
I’ll try to find the QST article on this and RELAY next week. High
RF gain is BAD, esp on 75 & 80M!

Good work on the RELAYS tonight!  Good call Steve 🙂  There was a
a double as Doug started the first RELAY.

Now going to quickly put on my other matchbox, Ameritron sparking
with 50 watts here 🙁

Pulled the power lead from my transmitter, and that made me have to
reboot, but I’M BACK!  🙂      grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Stay safe out there guys!

:mg:527  To all the ORCA guys

Things are going well here, Ive been i z oing  X?o’s and my own projects-  fixing my car that was running rough and antenna repairs ( a constant Battle)  I found out what
the probleem was with the car by having it run on a  complete diagnosis and the diagnoses was the I had plugged up egr valve  It was making the car run real rough, the
price to fix was too much so I fixed it myself here at home and saved alot of money, you know that really feels gud   thanks for the great net  73’s de K7dv

Thank you for participating in the Western Digital Net!

With ops like you we are able to use our NBEMS skills to offer a real service to the Amateur Radio community.

We would like to thank Doug K7KY and Mindy W7ZAP and all the ops from the ORCA Net for training and developing the many conventions and skills we use here. Please
check out the ORCA Net at this time (0230 ZULU) and frequency every Tuesday night!

We also encourage any and all ops who wish to provide fills, test modes, macros, etc., to use this frequency daily. This time and place on the band is becoming a known
‘watering hole’ for all digital ops.

Thanks from the WDN team and good evening from Sonoma County, California!
