Welcome to the Western Digital HF Net.

This West-of-the-Rockies digital traffic net endeavors to reach out to Amateur radio stations and provide traffic relay
service:

–€” In times of poor voice propagation;
–€” In circumstances where accurate information needs to get through;
— To pass non-trivial traffic and QSTs to participating stations;
— To relay non-trivial information to remote stations;
— And to relay traffic for stations in challenging situations.

We serve the entire amateur radio community and can use our NBEMS capabilities and relay locations to assist voice
nets, mobile stations, QRP stations and to check DX and propagation. We are not an end-to-end system like NTS, we
are an FLDigi-based relay net for those using sound card systems. We can also forward your traffic beyond our net
(see below).

All stations are welcomed.

IMPORTANT: It will be assumed that your traffic is Routine (no need to announce Routine) unless the Priority word is added. PLEASE ONLY USE PRIORITY FOR URGENT TRAFFIC. We will drop everything and deal with that traffic before anything else.

HOW TO BREAK
If you need to break in, there are two methods. You can send a brief TUNE signal in between any TX or you can use Video ID just above or below *only NCS is not TXing.*  NCS will acknowledge your break immediately to see what you need.

HOW TO SEND TRAFFIC AND QSTs
Please keep your traffic as brief as possible! Following the conventions established by the ORCA Net, longer QSTs should be sent via FLAmp or FLMessage. Shorter traffic may be sent by KBD or FLMsg.

When you check in use Pre-Tune or Video ID (to prevent doubles) then, if clear, send the following:

URCALL URName [ Priority | QRU | QNX | QST | (#) QTC for CALLSIGN | Relay ]

NOTE: If you have traffic that needs to be forwarded beyond this net, check in with:
“URCALL URName 1 QTC WL2K”
“URCALL URName 1 QTC BBS”
“URCALL URName 1 QTC Email”
or (**only** if you know what you are doing):
“URCALL URName 1 QTC for NTS”

Please wait to be acknowledged. Traffic and QSTs will be queued.

Once the traffic round is complete, NCS will call each station who have QSTs. Comments will follow.

So any check-ins please come now. < K6ETA / NCS

OK tonight’s roster is rather light and we have no directed traffic declared.  Before we move to QSTs, do any stations have directed traffic? Pse come now.    <  K6ETA  / NCS

WDN < K6ETA / NCS  OK seeing none on the WF, we will move to QSTs after this:

ANNOUNCEMENTS

The WDN encourages ops to try their hand at being a guest Net Control Station. Having several capable NCS ops will ensure that the net can carry on in an emergency or in the event of the current NCS being unavailable.

Part of the reason we have this traffic net is to keep our capabilities sharp in case the WDN is needed to get important information through. Not only does having several NCS ops available make that likely to continue, it also gives ops the experience and confidence to start new nets as needed.

We have a NCS Tools page on our website and you would also get on-air support if you run into trouble. In time, all regular contributing ops should give it a try. No pressure and no commitment required.

If you would like to be a guest NCS, please let us know during the Comments Round. You can also contact Steve K6ETA at k6eta@comcast.net.

Before we move to Comments Round, a brief clarification.  Stations checking in QNX are assumed to be either off frequency or inactive for any relay requests or Comment Round. Stations checking in QRU are still considered active and may be asked to relay. They may also be making Comments and will be called on for that.

I hope that makes sense between QRU and QNX on this net. We are not only a traffic net, but do a lot of relay work.

We’ve been buying spare LA batteries for trucks, tractors, radios, RV, etc, lately.  They may become scarce and even more expensive this summer. So many supply lines are down and maybe slow to resume function. Stock up on items usually sourced from China, or manufactured with components sourced from China.

We’ve been missing Fred KI7TPD on ORCA & WDN lately.  His HOA discovered his dipole and the antenna in the attic is not up to the task.  Maybe he’ll try a loop around the eves soon.

The clarification of QNX & QRU was timely and important. Parsing net protocols carefully is important. Great net Steve…  Ur doing a great job!   Doug K7KY

As we see in my QST, doctors in the US are struggling with possible ways to treat COVID-19 victims.  I read about the blood issues many weeks ago, and even Dr Phil had a guest on his program speaking directly about this and that lungs were mostly okay, but the blood clots were causing the majority of ham to lungs, kidneys etc.  Very scary.

Many states are relaxing the isolation rules.  This is surely going to cause far further spread of the virus.  My advice, use PPE and just assume nowhere is a safe zone.

Had a nice HARC net last night on our repeater.  I decided to make a map and show locals a really neat drive here in Eureka! on the Waterfront Drive.  I used FLdigi to transmit the images over VHF.  Was interesting and I’ve since updated my system to better use VHF/UHF.

Another marine layer day, but then cleared off by early afternoon to pretty nice temps and blue sky.

Carl km6liq came over today and modified my front garden bib so I can reach the hose bib, then he installed a wall mounted hose real so I can water my little flower garden.  I am lucky to have handy type helper bee friends!

I was nearly late getting checked into WDN.  Was very busy eating some wonderful crispy shell tacos I just finished making!  They were TASTY 🙂

Perhaps Fred KI7TPD can employ an antenna I suggested for Kai n6zzo, USE YOUR GUTTERS!  He had to do this after wind storm took out his antenna mast (Tree!) a few years ago. Works amazing well.

I think Bruce kb7vx might be skipped on the roster, seen him check in QRU.

I also am getting a lot done during quarantine. Governor of WA closed down all hunting and fishing for the year c/o COVID. Has a lot of people upset. Many are saying the Governor is overstepping his authority.

Now Governor of CA will close all beaches and parks starting tomorrow. Orange County has protested, reminding the Governor that fresh air and sunshine are recommended for good health and also weaken COVID. Will the Governor relent?

Tell Fred KI7TPD to do what I do == put your station in your camper

K6ETA de KB7VX

KB7VX < K6ETA / NCS  OK thanks Bruce, and yes, there are a lot of people pissed off abt seemingly unneeded closures.

OK That’s it for the net, but before we close, let’s see if there’s any further business. Also, since the roster is light, anyone with further comments..?    <  K6ETA  / NCS

Thank you for participating in the Western Digital Net!

With ops like you we are able to use our NBEMS skills to offer a real service to the Amateur Radio community.

We would like to thank Doug K7KY and Mindy W7ZAP and all the ops from the ORCA Net for training and developing the many conventions and skills we use here. Please check out the ORCA Net at this time (0230 ZULU) and frequency every Tuesday night!

We also encourage any and all ops who wish to provide fills, test modes, macros, etc., to hold this frequency after the net. Hopefully this time and place on the band will become a known ‘watering hole’ for all digital ops.

Thanks from the WDN team and good evening from Sonoma County, California!
