< K6ETA / NCS

Welcome to the Western Digital HF Net.

This West-of-the-Rockies digital traffic net endeavors to reach out to Amateur radio stations and provide traffic relay service:

— In times of poor voice propagation;
— In circumstances where accurate information needs to get through;
— To pass non-trivial traffic and QSTs to participating stations;
— To relay non-trivial information to remote stations;
— And to relay traffic for stations in challenging situations.

We serve the entire amateur radio community and can use our NBEMS capabilities and relay locations to assist voice nets, mobile
stations, QRP stations and to check DX and propagation. We are not an end-to-end system like NTS, we are an FLDigi-based relay net
for those using sound card systems. We can also forward your traffic beyond our net (see below).

All stations are welcomed.

IMPORTANT: It will be assumed that your traffic is Routine (no need to announce Routine) unless the Priority word is added. PLEASE
ONLY USE PRIORITY FOR URGENT TRAFFIC. We will drop everything and deal with that traffic before anything else.

HOW TO BREAK
If you need to break in, there are two methods. You can send a brief TUNE signal in between any TX or you can use Video ID just
above or below *only NCS is not TXing.*  NCS will acknowledge your break immediately to see what you need.

HOW TO SEND TRAFFIC AND QSTs
Please keep your traffic as brief as possible! Following the conventions established by the ORCA Net, longer QSTs should be sent via
FLAmp or FLMessage. Shorter traffic may be sent by KBD or FLMsg.

When you check in use Pre-Tune or Video ID (to prevent doubles) then, if clear, send the following:

URCALL URName [ Priority | QRU | QNX | QST | (#) QTC for CALLSIGN | Relay ]

NOTE: If you have traffic that needs to be forwarded beyond this net, check in with:
“URCALL URName 1 QTC WL2K”
“URCALL URName 1 QTC BBS”
“URCALL URName 1 QTC Email”
“URCALL URName 1 QTC for NTS”

Please wait to be acknowledged. Traffic and QSTs will be queued.

Once the traffic round is complete, NCS will call each station who have QSTs. Comments will follow.

So any check-ins please come now. < K6ETA / NCS

WDN < K6ETA / NCS OK seeing none, let’s move to the one QTC we have. I will need Doug K7KY to relay the entire QTC exchange, so
the net is his until that is complete.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Special thanks to Doug K7KY who took the net at the 11th hour last week! My XYL surprised me for our 26th anniverary and I had
little choice but to go along!

Speaking of alt NCS, anyone who would like to take even a portion of the net (Check Ins, QTCs, QSTs or Comments) is welcomed to
do so! All you need is a good antenna and the desire to try it out!

GE WDN… no longer doing research on COVID-19 these days. Busy with homestead chores & projects. All this time staying home has
been useful, I learned to bake bread last week and it’s pretty good. More practice today with local Op on HF/VHF for ARC digital
exercise on Sat. Will be interesting to see how Winlink performs and what issues pop up. Good copy on all tonight. Hope everyone is
doing well and staying healthy.
73,
Mindy W7ZAP over to Doug K7KY for COMMENTS….  < W7ZAP

I appreciate NCS asking how stations copied K7DV.  It’s very useful for NCS and the rest of us to have knowlege of how member
stations copy and how well they’re heard and where they’re heard.

This line in the Preamble may need repeating:
‘IMPORTANT: It will be assumed that your traffic is Routine (no need to announce Routine) unless the Priority word is added.’

Although WDN is a Traffic net, it’s also providing RELAY training.  Band condx will make us all great RELAY stations. The ORCA FLAMP
Exercise provides experience for RELAYING on WDN (-:

When stations REPORT ‘Missing PREAMBLE’, they almost always need most or all the other blocks.

Nice net, Steve.   Roster is a good size for learning and practicing WDN routines w/o  pressure.

Woke to fog, but that burned off into a very nice sunny day.  Carl
km6liq came over this pm and mowed the meadow.  We have more rain
coming in for the weekend.  More lawn.  Can’t win this battle.

I have a new Ubuntu drive to install on this old laptop.  I wanted
to do it this week, but my time has been used trying to deal with
COVID-19 and Disability Insurance with EDD.  I ended up posting
a letter to them this evening in hopes it will reach a person at
EDD.  Very trying to say the least.

At any rate, may have to sit out this ARC drill Saturday, however,
I will do what I can do for those participating here.  At least I
can still send HF WINLINK from this station, but trying to add the
forms to the old FLmsg isn’t going to work.

Note to self, don’t use an amplifier with a 300 watt match box.
“Just Say NO!”

Hope you have a wonderful day & night off last week Steve!  We missed
you.  Doug was very mean to all the ops and made them go to bed without
their supper!

Cleared 10 years of “stuff” out of the radio shack yesterday/last
night.  Have a ton for recycle and my trash bin is 1/2 full.  But
now I have what so few hams across America have–HORIZONTAL SPACE!
I even gave the cats back the perch above the old computer desk, so
they can once again gaze out the window and control all that they
domain!  I’d take a picture, but I fear it could be used against
me in a court of law…. ..  …. ..

I fear Humboldt county is past the 100 COVID-19 mark.  Del Norte
to the north is quickly trying to catch up.  BE SAFE out there.

Good FLamp traffic tonight.  Pleased that I was able to copy all
except Dave tonight.  Oh yeah, both FLmsg 100%.

Over to Bruce kb7vx!

Fine work everyone!    Great to see Mat on here for the first time. Have you
in my logbook here om!

also, one question.   I heard Dave k7dv really well for his comments,
however, there was a lul of the band at the VERY beginning, which caused
FLdigi to not save it as an FLmsg.   Now Dave’s message was encoded (not
text), but with Doug’s RELAY, Doug’s message was plain text.  How did you
do that Doug?

Thank you for participating in the Western Digital Net!

With ops like you we are able to use our NBEMS skills to offer a real service to the Amateur Radio community.

We would like to thank Doug K7KY and Mindy W7ZAP and all the ops from the ORCA Net for training and developing the many
conventions and skills we use here. Please check out the ORCA Net at this time (0230 ZULU) and frequency every Tuesday night!

We also encourage any and all ops who wish to provide fills, test modes, macros, etc., to use this frequency daily. This time and place
on the band is becoming a known ‘watering hole’ for all digital ops.

Thanks from the WDN team and good evening from Sonoma County, California!
