< K6ETA / NCS
Welcome to the Western Digital HF Net.
This West-of-the-Rockies digital traffic net endeavors to reach out to Amateur radio stations and provide traffic relay service:
— In times of poor voice propagation;
— In circumstances where accurate information needs to get through;
— To pass non-trivial traffic and QSTs to participating stations;
— To relay non-trivial information to remote stations;
— And to relay traffic for stations in challenging situations.
We serve the entire amateur radio community and can use our NBEMS capabilities and relay locations to assist voice nets,
mobile stations, QRP stations and to check DX and propagation. We are not an end-to-end system like NTS, we are an FLDigi-ba
sed relay net for those using sound card systems. We can also forward your traffic beyond our net (see below).
All stations are welcomed.
IMPORTANT: It will be assumed that your traffic is Routine (no need to announce Routine) unless the Priority word is added.
PLEASE ONLY USE PRIORITY FOR URGENT TRAFFIC. We will drop everything and deal with that traffic before anything else.
HOW TO BREAK
If you need to break in, there are two methods. You can send a brief TUNE signal in between any TX or you can use Video ID
just above or below *only when NCS is not TXing.* NCS will acknowledge your break immediately to see what you need.
HOW TO SEND TRAFFIC AND QSTs
Please keep your traffic as brief as possible! Longer QSTs should be sent via FLAmp or FLMessage. Shorter traffic may be sent
by KBD or FLMsg.
When you check in use Pre-Tune or Video ID (to prevent doubles) then, if clear, send the following:
URCALL URName [ Priority | QRU | QNX | QST | (#) QTC for CALLSIGN | Relay ]
NOTE: If you have traffic that needs to be forwarded beyond this net, check in with:
“URCALL URName 1 QTC WL2K”
“URCALL URName 1 QTC BBS”
“URCALL URName 1 QTC Email”
“URCALL URName 1 QTC for NTS”
Please wait to be acknowledged. Traffic and QSTs will be queued.
Once the traffic round is complete, NCS will call each station who have QSTs. Comments will follow.
So any check-ins please come now. < K6ETA / NCS

WDN < K6ETA / NCS OK agn we have a sunspot group that is popping minor flares, so this will be interesting.
BK
OK, no one checked in with directed =traffic, so let’s go right to QSTs starting with the following:
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Thanks to testing done by Doug K7KY, we have made some corrections to the procedure for sending the WDN messages that
are intended to be forwarded to the NTS. Please review the instructions on the WDN website.
http://westerndigitalnet.org/ntsd-relays
A note about relays.
Any station providing a relay to the net will likely to be asked to continue to relay traffic for that station. If NCS asks you to
relay, the Net is yours until you finish the exchange with the weaker station and give the net back to NCS.
Any relays that are likely to take a long time will may be requested by NCS to take up 10 or down 10 in order for the Net to
continue on. NCS will give instructions if that’s the case.
A reminder about QRU vs QNX in the context of this net:
Stations checking in QRU are assumed to still be ACTVE and monitoring the net and may be called on for Relays or Comments.
Stations checking in QNX are assumed to be INACTIVE and maybe off frequency altogether. They will not be callen on unless
they Re-Check In.

ORCA also had an unusually light Roster this week. Maybe the attraction of so many Protests scheduled for evenings? Short
nets are good too. Sometimes I hope for a short net (-: Nice job, Brad WA7HHE! Thanks for running WDN, Steve. < K7KY

WA7HHE < K6ETA / NCS Fine biz Brad and you did very well indeed! Yeah, it’s actually kinda fun to do Comments because NCS
has the opportunity to comment on the comments! You kept a nice cadence too.
BK
OK, that’s amazingly IT for the net, so we will just put out a lst call for check-ins or Comments from beyond! All are welcomed,

I wonder how busy your winlink node was for the ARC drill? Heard some feedback, but wonder how busy your HF rig was for
the drill?

KE6SLS < K6ETA / NCS yeah I forgot abt the drill and was wondering why the RMS Gateway was blowing up! I haven’t tallied
the number yet but I think it was 7 or 8 contacts. BTU Jaye KE6SLS < K6ETA cn)Jkt QNeRinö_r aôztUste.l r& eEc )ti 6 tt:iiR
fb Steve. It’s great having that node close enough that I can almost always work it if 40/20 are pooped out. I helped kg6lhw
here in Humboldt set up with his winlink. It was kicking his butt, but after 20-30 minutes, showed him how to set the ALC and
we also used FLdigi for that, thank god for FLdigi! Then he was able to move back over to winlink and BAM, he was working
nodes right off the bat. He was very happy camper. Thanks to Doug also, Doug mentored me back abaout 6 months ago
helping me set up and use PAT for linux.
good work om!

W7ZAP < K6ETA / NCS Thanks for showing us how a relay ids done! Sometimes the Net may think nothing is happening as a
weak station is brough in, so it’s important to track who has the net so to speak. If NCS asks for a relay, that station has the net
until she/he gives it back.

Thank you for participating in the Western Digital Net!
With ops like you we are able to use our NBEMS skills to offer a real service to the Amateur Radio community.
We would like to thank Doug K7KY and Mindy W7ZAP and all the ops from the ORCA Net for training and developing the many
conventions and skills we use here. Please check out the ORCA Net at this time (0230 ZULU) and frequency every Tuesday
night!
We also encourage any and all ops who wish to provide fills, test modes, macros, etc., to use this frequency daily. This time and
place on the band is becoming a known ‘watering hole’ for all digital ops.
Thanks from the WDN team and good evening from Sonoma County, California!
